About The Position

Under general supervision, the Firefighter performs fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue duties, and acts as a Firefighter-EMT/Paramedic. This is highly skilled, technical-level work responsible for protecting life and property, as well as related duties as required. Employees are expected to embrace the City of McKinney’s core values of Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence (RISE), contribute to a high-performance organization, and help sustain a healthy, family-oriented work environment. Applicants must complete both steps of the application process: submit an application through Government Jobs and, after receiving approval and an email link from McKinney Fire Department, complete an online-based written exam and video interview through Public Safety Answers. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are expected to receive the testing link within 1–2 days. The exam must be completed by November 30, 2026. All certifications must be attached to the application. The minimum passing score on the online exam is 70%; qualifying military candidates with an Honorable Discharge documented on DD-214 receive an additional five points to the minimum passing score. The position includes a physical ability test similar to the IAFF/IAFC CPAT, which is pass/fail and allows a maximum of 8 minutes and 30 seconds. Some events require a weighted vest and helmet. The test includes an aerial climb with tool identification, a Keiser sled task, stair climbing with a high-rise pack and hose-roll hoist, dragging a charged hose line, carrying a ladder, and dragging a dummy. The listed base salary is $86,680.75–$106,804.62. Additional incentive pay may include monthly payments for paramedic certification, education, certifications, and field-training paramedic duties, as well as hourly ambulance pay. Experienced firefighters with advanced Texas Commission on Fire Protection certifications may be reviewed for lateral entry; if approved, placement on the pay scale depends on full-time experience and TCFP certifications.
