About The Position

This recruitment process is for the Firefighter Trainee Academy list, Career Firefighter Transition Academy and Career Firefighter Bridge Academy lists, depending on the experience and certifications documented. Candidates must meet qualifications and requirements as stated in the city job description or as detailed in this notice. Provides emergency fire suppression, rescue, and medical services. Responds to alarms as a member of a firefighting company. Lays and connects hose lines, directs water and pressure streams, uses chemical extinguishers, raises and climbs ladders, ventilates buildings, rescues persons. Operates all types of bars, hooks, lines, forcible entry tools, and other rescue equipment. Protects citizens' property; performs salvage and clean-up operations. Provides emergency medical technician level assistance at injury or accident scenes involving basic life support, and paramedic support functions. Performs first responder hazardous materials procedures. Participates in a physical fitness program to maintain required physical condition.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED by application close date
  • 18 years or older
  • Completed and active Arizona Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. A completed and active Arizona Paramedic certification is also acceptable.
  • National Registry (NR) certification for EMT or Paramedic is acceptable at time of hire but conversion to an Arizona Department of Health Services certification is expected by start of academy.
  • Current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) from Qualified Agencies showing certified by IAFF (examples include but are not limited to: National Testing Network, Maricopa Community College).
  • Valid / Unrestricted Arizona Driver's License with an acceptable (39 month minimum) driving record
  • Binocular Vision must be at least 20/40 (for medical requirements review NFPA standards)
  • If qualifying for ARS preference points, upload PDF documentation showing the required information (e.g., DD 214 for Veteran status).
  • Successful completion of the current firefighter series testing process.
  • Candidates selected for conditional offer must successfully complete pre and post offer requirements that may include but are not limited to: Department of Public Safety and FBI background check, fingerprint, MVR, alcohol/drug testing, employer reference check and pass a medical physical administered by a Glendale Fire Department authorized physician and meeting NFPA standards.
  • Must currently be employed / working as a career full-time, paid firefighter (for advanced academies). This does not include compensated or non-compensated volunteer firefighter, or temporary / seasonal / part time wildland firefighter status.
  • For Advanced Career Transition Academy: Applicants must have a graduation certificate from a qualified Arizona Fire Academy or training center listed: City Public Safety Training Center: Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale Regional, Mesa, Phoenix Fire Department Academy; or Tempe APS joint fire training center.
  • For Advanced Career Bridge Academy: Applicants that do not have an Arizona Fire Academy / training center graduation certificate from the above agencies may qualify with proof of certification from: IFSAC / Pro Board or State Firefighter I & II certifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference may be given to candidates that upload an active and completed Paramedic certification at the time of application.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
  • One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education if education is required.
