About The Position

Under general supervision, responds to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, rescues, and other emergency and non-emergency situations. Performs maintenance on fire station, equipment, and apparatus. Participates in fire suppression, prevention, inspection, education and other fire related activities. Exercises no supervision.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • Lateral candidates must be current employees of another recognized public agency who have completed at least 12 months of continuous full-time service as a Firefighter Paramedic.
  • All certifications and proof of completion from an accredited California State Fire Academy or California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I (FFI) certificate must be submitted with the application.
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited California State Fire Academy or possess a California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I.
  • Cal-JAC CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) Card must be dated between May 31, 2025 – May 31, 2026.
  • Must be current on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List (SEL) on May 31, 2026.
  • A passing score (70% or higher) on the FCTC Written Test must be dated between May 31, 2025 and May 31, 2026.
  • Possession of a California State Paramedic license.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver's License, with the ability to obtain a valid California Driver's License prior to appointment.
  • ICEMA Paramedic Accreditation (required within 30 days of appointment).
  • Possession of Class C Firefighter endorsement "RES50" or California Commercial Driver's License (required within one year of appointment).
  • Ability to work in a standard office environment.
  • Ability to work outside.
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, and lift 100 lbs.
  • Endure exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards.
  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces.

Nice To Haves

  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Fire Science or a related field is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to fires and other emergency calls, including medical calls, and provides advance life support and patient care in compliance with the department's SOPs, protocols, and directives.
  • Connects and lays hose lines and enters burning buildings with these lines.
  • Assists in operating nozzles and directing a stream of water onto the fire.
  • Carries and operates various types of fire extinguishers.
  • Raises, lowers and climbs ladders.
  • Makes forcible entry into buildings when necessary.
  • Ventilates buildings to drive out smoke and gases.
  • Performs salvage and over-hauling operations.
  • May drive or operate a piece of auxiliary equipment including, but not limited to, a paramedic squad and/or tiller portion of a tractor drawn aerial.
  • Inspects, tests, cleans, and services equipment.
  • Participates in inspections of residential and commercial buildings for fire prevention and pre-fire planning purposes.
  • Attends and participates in special drills and other training and recertification activities.
  • Participates in public relations programs.
  • Cleans and maintains station quarters, grounds and equipment; performs routine housekeeping chores.
  • Assists visitors at the station and conducts tours.
  • Responds for call-back duty during off duty hours, if required.
  • Adheres to departmental policies, procedures, objectives, safety, infection control, and quality assurance programs.
  • Participates in a quality assurance program through post-incident analysis and debriefings.
  • Interacts effectively, professionally, tactfully, and confidentially with patients, general public, and all participating agencies, dispatch, law enforcement, medical, and hospital personnel.
  • Follows written Standard Operating Procedures and verbal directives as applicable to emergency medical services for the department.
  • Assesses and coordinates the resources and personnel to facilitate safety and quality care for all residents and patients.
  • Provides emergency medical care to patients under current protocols as authorized by the department Medical Director.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.
