About The Position

The Bridgewater Fire Department is seeking a full-time FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC. This role involves performing a wide range of firefighting activities, including operating equipment, containing and extinguishing fires, and performing salvage operations. Additionally, the position serves as a Paramedic, responsible for providing immediate care to critically ill or injured patients, transporting them to medical facilities, and maintaining all necessary certifications. The role also includes participating in training, maintaining equipment and facilities, and engaging with the community on safety topics.

Requirements

  • Registered Massachusetts EMT-Paramedic.
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
  • Ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment.
  • Ability to learn to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials and fire prevention techniques.
  • Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical activities during emergencies, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke.
  • Ability to act effectively in emergencies and stressful situations.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the general public.
  • Ability to make independent judgments that have considerable impacts on the organization.
  • Ability to pass rigorous Physical Agility Test; fitness, medical exams; and background investigation.
  • Must be physically able to lift and/or move up to 125 pounds and able to drag 175 pounds.
  • 15-mile residency requirement within one (1) year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs firefighting activities including fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishing tasks.
  • Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
  • Serves as a Paramedic: In charge of or drives an ambulance to emergency calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill or injured; transports the patient to a medical facility using the most expeditious routes to and from; prepares all reports required; has a thorough knowledge of efficient use of EMS and extrication equipment; performs patient care to level of training; maintains all appropriate certifications.
  • Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects
  • Operates radio and other communications equipment.
  • Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.
  • Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment.
  • Assists in the presentation of programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics. Escorts visitors of tours of the station, explains functions of equipment, basic fire prevention and fire education, etc.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
