About The Position

Performs skilled work extinguishing fires, conducting rescue operations, provides BLS and general station duties. An employee in this class is responsible for performing all functions and services of firefighting and emergency medical rescue. Emphasis of the work is on responding to and providing fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to citizens and businesses. Work involves extinguishing fires at fire scenes, safeguarding lives, preventing the recurrence of fires, and salvaging and protecting properties from the elements, vandalism, and theft. Work also includes routine inspection and maintenance of fire station facilities and equipment, providing basic life support, training and drilling in the use of fire equipment and firefighting techniques, and the performance of public relations activities. Work is often performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves personal hazard. Work is performed under the supervision of a senior fire officer and is reviewed through observation, reports, and discussion concerning the quality and effectiveness of fire efforts and related duties.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalency
  • Some work experience in a public safety environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • NC Firefighter Certified
  • EMT
  • Haz-Mat OPS
  • Valid NC Class C Driver's License

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled work extinguishing fires and conducting rescue operations to preserve life and property.
  • Participates in hazardous material response and prevention programs.
  • Participates in post-fire operations of cleaning and salvage; covers furniture and fixtures and sweeps and mops water to minimize water damage; participates in retrieving, cleaning, and replacing all firefighting and medical equipment.
  • Performs pre-incident planning of area businesses and buildings.
  • Inspects, maintains, and makes minor repairs to the apparatus and hose loads to ensure the presence, cleanliness, and serviceability of necessary firefighting and emergency equipment, tools and supplies.
  • Performs testing and routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Performs maintenance on fire hydrants.
  • Maintains and performs minor repairs to and cleans assigned fire station quarters and grounds.
  • Assists with presenting public fire education programs and classes in schools and other venues.
  • Participates in training to assure proficiency in firefighting techniques; trains for knowledge of all equipment and apparatus as well as their operations; assists with residential and business fire prevention inspections; inspects and prepares scaled drawings and pre-plan firefighting strategies; maintains knowledge of sprinkled buildings and hydrant locations.
  • Participates in routine maintenance and servicing of equipment including checking and filling self-contained breathing apparatus, washing and waxing trucks, checking batteries, checking fuel and oil levels, cleaning and drying hose, and inspecting hose and hose connections for damage and wear; sweeps, mops, paints, and washing windows of fire station.
  • Conducts tours of the fire station.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
