About The Position

Under general supervision, protects and serves the citizens of the City of Clinton by responding to specialized fire, medical, and rescue operations, as well as other calls for service. Operates as both a firefighter and driver operator. Drives, operates, and maintains firefighting and rescue apparatus and equipment. Participates in various firefighting suppression and rescue operations. Participates in public relations events and performs related work as assigned. Position reports to the Shift Captain.

Requirements

  • Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED from an acceptable accredited high school. (Most “internet” diplomas are not acceptable)
  • Must possess a minimum certification as an IFSAC or ProBoard Firefighter II certification from a certifying fire training entity.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Possess and maintain a valid South Carolina E Driver’s License.
  • Complete IFSAC / ProBoard (or equivalent) Driver Operator I
  • Complete I IFSAC / ProBoard (or equivalent) Driver Operator Rural Water
  • Complete IFSAC / ProBoard (or equivalent) Driver Operator Aerial
  • Complete NFA Officer programs of PICO, STICO, DEMCO (SCFA 2118,2119, and 2121 courses)
  • Complete Haz-Mat Technician (SCFA 2723 course)
  • Complete Confine Space Rescue (SCFA 3390 and 3392 course)
  • Operates in accordance with all established routine working, personnel, ethical, and safety guidelines, rules, and regulations.
  • Must be able to pass all physical and psychological demands of the position, including a pre-employment physical, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Fit Test, drug screening, and criminal history background checks.
  • Must meet and maintain the residency requirement policy while in this position.
  • Has applicable knowledge of federal, state, and local rules, regulations, laws, ordinances, OSHA, operating guidelines, personnel policies, and safety and housekeeping policies governing the activities of the Fire Department.
  • Has knowledge of approved fire, medical, and rescue practices and methods.

  • Ability to deal with exposure to a variety of human tragedies, including, but not limited to, injuries ranging from minor to extreme, blood, automobile collisions, structural and vehicle fires, vehicle entrapments and rescue, and various other similar situations.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of fire equipment and tools, including fire apparatus, rescue/extrication, two-way radio, ladder, hose nozzle, etc.
  • Must be able to wear firefighting protective clothing, self-contained breathing apparatus, and carry certain firefighting equipment simultaneously.
  • Must be physically able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including non-responsive human beings.
  • Work involves sitting or standing, climbing (ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps, poles), balancing (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or running on narrow, slippery surfaces), handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning) for long periods of time.
  • The employee is exposed to computer screens and other electronic telecommunications equipment and screens.
  • The position requires the use of various pieces of personal protective equipment, including, but not limited to, a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and full- or half-face respirators, all of which require medical clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Drives, operates, and maintains firefighting apparatus and equipment on an assigned basis; operates pumps; uses ladders, axes, shovels, and other fire fighting equipment.
  • Responds to automobile accidents, rescue calls, administering emergency medical aid to victims as required.
  • Responds to fire alarms; locates and extinguishes fires with suppression equipment; helps to lay and connect hose; operates hose nozzles and directs fog and water streams; participates in rescue and salvage operations; cleans and prepares fire fighting equipment for re-entry service; may assist in conducting fire inspections.
  • May assist in conducting major and minor fire-cause investigations and preliminary investigations at the scenes of fires; administers first-aid to persons; may appear as a witness in court for fire-related and/or arson charges.
  • Follows standard operating guidelines.
  • Participates in a continuing program of training, instruction, and attendance at scheduled training drills and classes. Some training classes may require travel and overnight stays.
  • Performs assignments and instructions in accordance with Departmental rules and regulations, which are received in general terms from a superior officer who reviews work methods and results through reports, observations, and discussions.
  • Provides assistance to fellow employees and officers as needed.
  • May direct traffic as required at emergency scenes or other non-emergency traffic during special events such as parades and festivals.
  • Receives, reviews, and processes various reports and records, including vehicle maintenance records, pre-fire plans, etc., and prepares and processes incident reports, wreck reports, personal training reports, fire reports, etc.
  • Operates, utilizes, and maintains a variety of firefighting and communication equipment and tools, such as fire apparatus, radios, cameras, computers/tablets, fire trucks, rescue trucks, firehouses, air packs, etc.
  • Performs various support functions, such as confined-space entry/rescue, for other agencies and city departments.
  • Provides fire, medical, and rescue support to special events as needed.
  • Performs related work as needed and is willing to perform assigned tasks.
  • May be subject to night, weekend, and holiday work.
  • May be subject to emergency situation recall.
  • Maintain proficiency in all aspects of firefighting training as required; attend routine and regular firefighting training and recertification courses/training as required or requested.
  • Adheres to all established OSHA, departmental, and city/administrative policies, guidelines, safety, and housekeeping standards to accomplish the mission of the City of Clinton and the Fire Department. Ensures such standards are not violated.
  • Must successfully possess and maintain Medical 1st Responder Certification and IFSAC or ProBoard Driver Operator from a certifying entity within one year of the date of hire.
