About The Position

An individual in this role is responsible for performing fire suppression, emergency medical care, hazardous materials mitigation, technical-rescue incident mitigation, training, and fire prevention activities. Additionally, firefighters in this position are expected to demonstrate competency in essential skills following a multi-week fire academy. Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions. This role is part of the Burlington Firefighters Association (BFFA).

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • EMT Certification (NREMT or VT EMT)
  • Valid CPAT certification obtained no more than 12 months prior to time of application. CPAT due by 12/31/2026.
  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.

Nice To Haves

  • Obtain AEMT licensure by the end of 24 months.

Responsibilities

  • Perform fire suppression, emergency medical care, hazardous materials mitigation, and technical-rescue incident mitigation.
  • Engage in training and fire prevention activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in essential skills following a multi-week fire academy.
  • Perform as a primary care attendant on medical calls, consistent with training and VT EMS protocols.
  • Provide verbal and written patient care reports.
  • Collaborate with co-workers to provide appropriate patient care during emergency incidents.
  • Learn department and city policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate the proper use and maintenance of fire department tools and equipment.
  • Drive and operate fire department apparatus, maintaining knowledge of the city layout and streets.
  • Proactively deal with problems at emergency incidents and in and around fire stations, working with team members to implement immediate solutions.
  • Complete physically demanding tasks with limited resources and often when sleep-deprived and/or physically exhausted.
  • Obtain AEMT licensure by the end of 24 months.
