About The Position

The BESS Fire Test Engineer will be involved in executing and analyzing fire and thermal runaway tests on battery modules, racks, and full-scale energy storage systems. This role plays a critical part in ensuring compliance with global safety standards and improving system design to mitigate fire risks.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1 to 2 years Experience and knowledge in fire testing, fire dynamics, combustion principles, and heat transfer, etc.. . Related to energy storage systems standard and regulations UL9540A, LSFT, NFPA, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with lithium-ion battery systems and thermal runaway testing.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems and test instrumentation.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Analytical mindset with a focus on identifying risks and optimization.
  • Experience in energy storage system

Responsibilities

  • Execute fire test plans design by the senior fire test manager for battery cells, modules, racks, and containerized BESS units.
  • Conduct thermal runaway propagation testing in accordance with standards such as UL 9540A, NFPA 855, IEC 62619, and other relevant codes.
  • Contribute in setting up fire test instrumentation (thermocouples, gas analyzers, heat flux sensors, pressure sensors, etc.).
  • Work in close collaboration with the senior fire test manager to leverage technical skills in BESS to design, plan, and oversee all UL 9540A and LSFT test activities, including thermal runaway initiation, test equipment layout, and coordination with third-party laboratories and internal stakeholders.
  • Participate in all aspects of UL9540A Unit Level and Large-Scale fire test projects including test plan development, instrumentation at factory level, test setup and execution at third-party laboratories to ensure timely and successful execution.
  • Participate in cross-functional collaboration with Engineering, Product Management, and regional teams to ensure alignment and knowledge sharing.
  • Work with senior fire test manager to develop and manage test schedules for all UL 9540A and LSFT testing activities, ensuring resource availability and on-time execution.
  • Collaborate with senior fire test manager to meet deadlines, define test KPIs, and ensure timely reporting of progress, results, and risks.
  • Analyze, process, and present test data in a clear and structured format suitable for internal and external stakeholders.
