About The Position

Design Works Engineering Ltd. is a multidisciplinary engineering firm offering civil, structural, mechanical, electrical engineering, energy modelling, and fire protection design services. Our team is driven by a shared vision to create exceptional projects and strong client relationships. We are seeking a Fire Protection Engineering Lead (Fire Sprinkler Designer) to join our growing team in Edmonton, AB. Reporting to the President & CEO, this role is responsible for leading the design, analysis, and implementation of fire protection systems on a variety of building projects.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with a specialization in Fire Protection
A minimum of 10 years' relevant experience in designing fire protection systems for commercial, low/high-rise, and multi-family residential buildings.
P.Eng. Designation in good standing with the relevant engineering association, with a focus on Fire Protection Engineering will be considered an asset.
Language of Work: English; Fluency in English is required for clear and effective communication across all levels of project involvement.
Strong communication skills are essential to effectively coordinate with inter-discipline teams, clients, vendors, and subcontractors, ensuring high-value engineering outcomes across projects.
In-depth knowledge and familiarity with fire protection industry codes and standards including NFPA codes, National Building Code, Provincial Building Code, and the ability to apply these in conjunction with client specifications for detailed fire protection system design.
Demonstrated leadership and business development skills to guide project teams and contribute to the growth of the fire protection engineering services.
Proficiency in software tools relevant to fire protection engineering, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Revit, and HydraCAD.

Responsibilities

Contribute to all project phases, ensuring compliance with applicable fire safety codes and standards while adhering to defined scope, timelines, and budget.
Design and specification of Fire Protection Systems, including but not limited to fire suppression systems, fire alarm systems, smoke management systems, and emergency lighting systems.
Prepare engineering drawings and specifications for fire protection systems to ensure detailed and accurate representation of the designed systems.
Stamp engineering drawings and documents to certify compliance with applicable codes, standards, and professional engineering requirements.
Review Client Specifications to ensure that all fire protection requirements are understood and incorporated into the design.
Write technical reports and analyses to support design submissions, demonstrating the effectiveness and compliance of fire protection systems.
Review shop drawings for compliance with the design and participate in the development of fire protection engineering standards to ensure consistency and high quality in all projects.
Obtain proposals from and follow up with suppliers and contractors to ensure that the materials and workmanship meet the project’s fire protection requirements.
Partner with cross-functional project team members to integrate fire protection systems with other building systems for a cohesive and efficient design.
Visit project sites for project-related activities, including inspections and audits of existing fire protection systems and to ensure compliance with the fire safety design during construction.
Perform fire risk assessments and modelling, including egress modelling and fire dynamics simulations, to ensure the safety and efficiency of fire protection strategies.
