About The Position

The Fire Sprinkler Designer position is responsible for operating with minimal supervision while completing project designs and submittals. The role requires familiarity with SFP’s quality documents, procedures, and work instructions as they relate to the design function. Entry-level candidates are welcome, and no prior experience is needed, though CAD or design experience is preferred (not necessarily from the fire industry).

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or equivalent required.
  • NICET II or NICET III and/or state-required certification required. Equivalent experience will be considered assuming the individual pursues NICET education.
  • 1-2 years’ experience as a sprinkler designer, required.
  • Construction experience, required.
  • Mechanical aptitude, required.
  • Basic and advanced math skills, required.
  • Ability to effectively read, write, and communicate in English with employees and customers.
  • Ability to operate a computer and use Microsoft Office.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required.
  • Must be able to comply with SFP’s Drug and Alcohol policy and Background screening requirements, which may also include customer-specific requirements based on contractual agreement.

Nice To Haves

  • CAD or design experience preferred, does not need to be from the fire industry.
  • Familiarity with HydraCad, SprinkCAD and/or other CAD software, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design automatic sprinkler systems including fire pumps, tanks, wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge systems using working knowledge of fire sprinkler codes.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations for each design.
  • Prepare submittal packages to send to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and subsequent correspondence to achieve design approval.
  • Participate in coordination meetings with contractors.
  • Participate in design kick-off meetings.
  • Prepare fabrication lists for pipe fabrication vendors and requisition materials for jobs, with assistance from the Design Manager or a Senior Sprinkler Designer.
  • Perform field surveys to ensure designs are appropriate for structures, with assistance from the Design Manager or a Senior Sprinkler Designer.
  • Assist field personnel with design-related installation issues.
  • Prepare and submit final job close-out documents after final acceptance testing.
  • Understand and follow SFP’s Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous communication program, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure all related safety documentation is accessible at all times on each project.
  • Periodically attend seminars or similar education/training sessions to stay abreast of the latest technology, codes, and standards changes.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
