About The Position

The Fire Safety Inspector-Buildings conducts monthly fire safety inspections in all Residence Halls and at least once per year in all other University-owned buildings. This involves checking for fire safety violations, writing reports, and working to resolve identified issues. All work is submitted to the Fire Safety Officer or Specialist, and the database must be kept up to date. The inspector shares duties equally with one other Fire Safety Inspector–Buildings. The role is part-time, working 15 hours per week with flexible scheduling. Key responsibilities include conducting inspections, noting and resolving fire extinguisher conditions, updating databases, submitting work orders, and communicating with building managers. The inspector also assists with the inspection of fire extinguishers, reporting deficiencies, and supporting the Fire Inspector I. Additionally, the role involves coordinating building evacuation drills, including night-time fire drills in residence halls, and assisting the Fire Safety Officer and Specialist with special projects and training events. The inspector is empowered to notify building managers and occupants of code violations, advise on immediate corrections or Facilities Management Service Response tasks, and submit service requests through Planon.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of Rhode Island Fire and Life Safety Codes.
  • Fire safety knowledge and experience.
  • Ability to use a computer to enter data, generate work orders and communicate by email.
  • All offers of employment are contingent upon a criminal background check and education verification that are satisfactory to Brown University.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Fire Safety inspections monthly in all Residence Halls and at least once per year in all other University-owned buildings.
  • Check for all Fire Safety violations as directed.
  • Write reports and work towards resolving any issues that are identified.
  • Submit all work to the Fire Safety Officer or Specialist and keep the database up to date.
  • Share duties equally with one other Fire Safety Inspector–Buildings.
  • Conduct Fire Safety inspections in University-owned buildings on a monthly basis for dormitories and on an annual basis for all other type occupancies.
  • Work with building representatives towards resolving any issues that are identified.
  • During the course of inspections, note the condition of fire extinguishers and pass information on to the supervisor.
  • Where possible, resolve simple problems with fire extinguishers on-site.
  • Update database and submit work orders to Service Response, as needed, prior to the end of each shift.
  • Become familiar with buildings and their managers in order to provide positive communications.
  • Assist with the inspection of fire extinguishers installed in Brown-owned buildings.
  • Check each fire extinguisher for proper installation location, mounting hardware, signage and readiness for use.
  • Report and log any noted deficiencies to the Fire Safety Officer or the Fire Safety Specialist.
  • Assist in the training, building access and support of the Fire Inspector I, who is managing the fire extinguisher inspection process.
  • Help coordinate the planning and execution of building evacuation drills in all University buildings, when requested, including fire drills in residence halls and other buildings.
  • Assist with a minimum of two, night-time fire drills per semester.
  • Assist the Fire Safety Officer and Fire Safety Specialist with special projects, including fire extinguisher training.
  • Provide support and presence at community events or training as needed, when requested by the manager.
  • Notify building managers and occupants in the area of any code violations or corrections that can be made immediately or advise them if it is a Facilities Management Service Response task.
  • Submit service requests for repairs and corrections through Planon, as applicable.
