About The Position

This is a non-exempt position responsible for middle management work in command of a shift/station of the Fire Rescue Department. The role involves the supervision and direction of subordinate personnel, including Lieutenants, paramedics, driver/engineers, emergency medical technicians, and firefighters. The Captain functions as the incident commander during emergency operations, exercising considerable independent judgment in interpreting protocols and setting direction. This position is responsible for maintaining a supervisory role, ensuring personnel are informed of policies, procedures, and laws relevant to their jobs. The Captain reports to a Battalion Chief and is responsible for keeping staff informed of operational and non-operational issues affecting the organization's stability. The role requires maintaining the trust and confidence of the organization and the Fire Chief. Employees are hired as AT WILL employees.

  • Some knowledge of modern information systems, data management systems, and standard office software applications.
  • EMT/Paramedic certification.

  • CPR instructor certification.
  • Course Delivery.
  • Two (2) continuous years of service as a Lieutenant and signed off as an Acting Captain prior to the promotional process.
  • CPR Ethical Legal Issues for the Fire Service course.
  • Company Officer course.
  • SERP course.
  • NIMS ICS 300.
  • Associate of Science Degree in a related field within 3 years of promotion.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from an accredited College with a degree.
  • Considerable experience in supervision and management (preferably in Fire/Rescue).

Responsibilities

  • Supervision of a shift/station and individual members of the department during operations or while on City property.
  • Trains, guides, and advises subordinates in all phases of their responsibilities.
  • Ensures that members adhere to established protocols.
  • Reviews performance evaluations and evaluates subordinates.
  • Establishes assignments and manages necessary items involved in supervising a shift/station.
  • Responds to calls for service and supervises/coordinates operations.
  • Identifies problems, makes recommendations, and takes appropriate action through task delegation and individual action.
  • Reviews and approves correspondence proceeding through the chain of command.
  • Prepares reports and maintains appropriate records.
  • Prepares and approves purchase requests.
  • Monitors reports (operational & training) for trends to make course corrections and recommendations to administration.
  • Develops, plans, and implements projects, initiatives, and programs.
  • Performs various technical and managerial functions.
  • Inspects subordinate members and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Conducts research and makes recommendations concerning operational readiness, training, and the long-term health of the organization.
  • Reports City and Departmental policy and procedure violations to supervisors for further action.
  • Administratively assists with special projects and assignments.
  • Performs related work as required and as directed.
  • Attends meetings as directed.
  • Ensures compliance with the City code and procurement policies and procedures by reviewing and monitoring procurements conducted by subordinates.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
