About The Position

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Fire Protection Engineer to work in our Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality department. Our team works onsite with a 4x10 work schedule located at the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) facility with every Friday off. You will report to the MFC Occupational Safety and Health (OS&H) Manager and will develop Fire Hazard Analysis for nuclear facilities, participate in design reviews for new facilities and facility modifications, review work control documents that require advanced Fire Protection solutions, and provide fire protection support and expertise to MFC as the Fire Protection Engineer.

Requirements

  • Level 2: Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering Technology or related engineering technology or related engineering field degree from an ABET-accredited program and 2 years fire protection experience, or a Master’s Degree in fire protection or related engineering field.
  • Level 3: Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering Technology or related engineering technology or related engineering field degree from an ABET-accredited program and 5 years experience or Master’s Degree in fire protection or related engineering field and 2 years experience.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Fire Hazard Analysis and Facility Assessments for operations, processes, facilities, and structures. This includes performing fire dynamics calculations and use of professional judgement to determine fire/smoke spread and control; analyzing fire protection systems to determine adequacy of fire control; analyzing Life Safety Code to ensure adequacy of evacuation of a facility in the event of a fire; ensuring DOE orders and standards are being followed in nuclear and non-nuclear facilities and structures; ensuring National Fire Protection Association, International Building Codes, International Fire Codes, Idaho Codes, and City codes, as applicable, are being met or exceeded; interacting with state, city, and DOE officials as required.
  • Participate in the identification, analysis, and mitigation of Fire Protection related hazards associated with work organization design, operations, and maintenance using a complete knowledge of Fire Protection engineering principles. Review work control documents to ensure appropriate incorporation of Fire Protection theories and principles required for hazard mitigation controls.
  • Determine and develop approaches to deficiencies with innovative and practical solutions.
  • Provide input/direction to laboratory level fire protection related performance measures, reports, and assessments.
  • Achieve and maintain professional qualifications, including the INL Fire Protection Qualification. Take actions to stay up to date with new developments in fire protection. Maintain relationships of trust with co-workers and customers.
  • Review work organization’s broad base of design activities for new or modified systems, structures and components to ensure fire protection related criteria is identified and included in design criteria documents, incorporated in designs, and substantially verified through required acceptance testing; Approve a broad base of Fire Protection system impairments/ outages, and establish required compensatory measures. Coordinate impairment closure issues with the INL Fire Marshal.
  • Conduct fire protection engineering surveys and prepare corrective actions or suggested improvement reports for fire protection deficiencies, including cost estimates.
  • Participate in the development of various budgets as they pertain to fire protection equipment and projects.
