ICMS is looking for an experienced Fire Protection Engineer who shall be an integral part of the design as it relates to fire protection. This includes, but is not limited to, building code analysis, life safety code analysis, design of automatic detection and suppression systems, water supply analysis, and a multi-discipline review of the entire project.

Requirements

  • A registered professional engineer (P.E.) required
  • Must meet one of the following conditions:
  • - A registered professional engineer (P.E.) having a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, from an accredited university engineering program, plus a minimum of 5 years' work experience in fire protection engineering.
  • - A registered professional engineer (P.E.) who has passed the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveys (NCEES) fire protection engineering written examination.
  • - A registered professional engineer (P.E.) in a related engineering discipline with a minimum of 5 years' experience, dedicated to fire protection engineering that can be verified with documentation.
  • Experience designing, reviewing, or managing fire protection systems for commercial, industrial, institutional, healthcare, laboratory, or government facilities.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including: NFPA Codes and Standards, International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC), Life Safety Code (NFPA 101), UFC (Unified Facilities Criteria) (for federal projects), OSHA regulations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Strong technical report writing and communication skills.
  • As a condition of employment, it will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results.
  • It is mandatory that all Contractor personnel working onsite at federal facilities meet federal government security clearance standards. Minimum investigation at a Public Trust level required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead Fire Protection Engineer and an integral member of the multidisciplinary design team for all fire protection and life safety engineering aspects of the project.
  • Develop the fire protection design basis and establish project-specific fire protection and life safety criteria in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and Owner requirements.
  • Perform building code and fire code analyses to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and project-specific regulations.
  • Conduct life safety analyses, including occupant load determinations, means of egress evaluations, travel distance calculations, occupancy classifications, fire-resistance ratings, and smoke compartmentation requirements.
  • Design and specify fire protection systems.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations, water supply analyses, and fire flow evaluations to verify adequate system performance and compliance with design criteria.
  • Prepare and review fire protection engineering calculations, technical specifications, design narratives, drawings, and construction documents.
  • Develop performance-based fire protection solutions where prescriptive code requirements are not applicable or where alternative means and methods are proposed.
  • Coordinate fire protection system designs with architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing disciplines to ensure complete integration into the overall facility design.
  • Review multidisciplinary design documents at each design milestone (e.g., Concept, 35%, 65%, 95%, and Final Design) to identify and resolve fire protection and life safety issues.
  • Participate in design reviews, value engineering studies, constructability reviews, and risk assessments to optimize fire protection system performance and lifecycle cost.
  • Evaluate proposed design modifications and provide engineering recommendations regarding their impact on fire protection and life safety compliance.
  • Review contractor design submittals, shop drawings, product data, and Requests for Information (RFIs) for conformance with the contract documents and design intent.
  • Provide engineering support during construction by responding to technical questions and reviewing proposed changes affecting fire protection systems.
  • Support system acceptance testing and commissioning activities by verifying that installed systems conform to the approved design and project performance requirements.
  • Coordinate with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and other regulatory agencies to obtain required approvals and resolve code compliance issues.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of engineering analyses, design decisions, code interpretations, and technical recommendations throughout the project lifecycle.
