About The Position

Provide technical and programmatic fire protection, life safety, and occupational safety and health (OSH) support to Federal clients. This includes providing fire protection engineering, life safety, and building and fire code compliance advisory services to architects, developers, owners, and government clients. The role involves reviewing and analyzing proposed fire protection and life safety (FP/LS) equipment and design changes to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes and criteria. The engineer will act as a subject matter expert (SME) and representative of the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) in the development of Statements of Work (SOWs) and design and construction proposals. Developing performance-based design analyses, providing engineering reviews of shop drawings, construction oversight, field surveys, and systems acceptance testing for life safety systems are key responsibilities. The role also includes participating in project meetings, evaluating existing building and life safety system conditions, and developing technical reports on fire prevention and protection issues. Additionally, the Senior Fire Protection Engineer will review deliverables from junior engineers, providing feedback, mentoring, and training. Due to the nature of the work, U.S. citizenship is required.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in the field of fire protection
  • Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Experience in healthcare settings
  • Experience applying Fire Protection and Life Safety requirements to design reviews of new and updated facilities, systems, and equipment
  • Experience with on-site audits and assessments for compliance and generation of associated reports
  • Experience with FP/LS codes applicable to healthcare facilities, including NFPA 99 and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, or facilities standards such as UFC 3-600-01 or UFC 3-601-02
  • Experience with Federal government agencies such as EPA, VHA, DoD, and FAA
  • Knowledge of all the major areas of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and FP/LS building codes, regulations, and standards, including The Joint Commission requirements
  • Knowledge of fire protection codes and standards, including the latest edition of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 13, NFPA 25, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 75, and NFPA 90A
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements
  • Master's degree
  • U.S. citizenship is required

  • Experience with OSH regulatory and consensus standards such as 29 CFR 1910, 1926,1960, NFPA 70, 70E, and 101 and enterprise-level OSH policies and guidance
  • Experience with fire suppression and detection systems design
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certification
  • Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) Certification

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering reviews of shop drawings, construction oversight and inspection, field surveys and systems acceptance testing for life safety systems.
  • Participate in project meetings to provide progress oversight, coordinate prioritization of work, and provide recommendations for resolution of issues.
  • Evaluate existing building and life safety system conditions through code compliance, life safety and fire hazards analysis surveys.
  • Develop technical reports detailing specific fire prevention and protection issues.
  • Review fire protection engineering deliverables developed by junior fire protection engineers and provide feedback, mentoring, and training.
