About The Position

The role oversees the full execution of the Fire Protection Program, ensuring systems meet DOE requirements, codes, and standards while coordinating closely with engineering and ES&H. It manages the performance, maintenance, reliability, and compliance of detection, suppression, and life‑safety systems, including troubleshooting, corrective actions, and cost‑effective operational solutions. It also carries significant ES&H responsibilities, such as administering the Hot Work Permit program, enforcing safety procedures, integrating hazard analyses into all work, and maintaining a safe, environmentally sound workplace for staff and subcontractors.

Requirements

  • 17 or more years of Experience in Fire Protection Operations and Maintenance.
  • 2 or more years Successful experience in Training, Leading, or Supervising Staff.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of various building and fire codes and the ability to research and interpret the code requirements.
  • Ability to manage and update a fire safety program for a campus environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to implement and apply innovative and creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Analytical ability to evaluate options and make optimal decisions.
  • Ability to negotiate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to mentor.

Responsibilities

  • Lead operational execution of the Fire Protection Program; ensures compliance with DOE requirements, codes, and standards; oversees inspection, testing, maintenance, and system performance.
  • Coordinate with Fire Protection Engineer, Engineering, and ES&H support system impairments, design changes, and Fire Hazard Analyses to maintain code compliance.
  • Oversee operation, maintenance, and reliability of detection, suppression, and life safety systems; ensures systems support mission needs and evolving facility use.
  • Manage troubleshooting, corrective actions, and service contracts; drives cost-effective solutions, minimizes operational impacts, and tracks performance metrics.
  • Oversee elevator inspection, testing, and maintenance programs executed through subcontracted service providers.
  • Oversees the requirements and procedures of the Hot Work Permit program and fire extinguisher training.
  • Ensures staff and subcontractors are fully aware of their individual responsibilities to meet Lab policies to promote a safe, healthy and environmentally sound work area.
  • Ensures appropriate ES&H provisions are incorporated into all work. Activity hazard analyses are performed and documented prior to start of work.
  • Develops and/or modifies procedures to execute ES&H regulations and lessons learned.
  • Maintains an environmentally sound and safe workplace for area of responsibility. Reports unsafe conditions to management for corrective action(s).
  • Enforces the Laboratory ES&H requirements in the execution of all assigned duties.
  • Responsible for maintenance, inspection, testing, and maintaining accurate records for all elevators on site.
  • Responsible for the supervision, evaluation, and training of all staff members assigned to work group.
  • Provides guidance to technicians on the maintenance of facility fire protection systems.
