About The Position

Under supervision (Fire Prevention Specialist I) or general supervision (Fire Prevention Specialist II) in a civilian capacity, performs a variety of technical work including technical plan checks and inspections for a variety of facilities and construction sites to ensure compliance with State and local fire and life safety codes and ordinances; assists in coordinating public fire education program; maintains a variety of records, files, and related documents; performs related work as required. The Fire Prevention Specialist I is the entry-level class, performing more routine tasks with limited scope. The Fire Prevention Specialist II is the full journey-level classification, performing the full range of duties with greater complexity and independence. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and typically filled by progression from Fire Prevention Specialist I or by external candidates with directly related experience and required licenses.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Class C driver's license issued from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Possession of Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D.
  • Fire Prevention Specialist I: One year of full-time experience in fire service, building trades, code enforcement, or related field.
  • Fire Prevention Specialist II: Two (2) years of full-time experience performing duties comparable to those of a Fire Prevention Specialist I.

Nice To Haves

  • College level courses in fire science.
  • An Associate Degree in Fire Science is desirable.
  • Possession of California Penal Code 832 is preferred or must be acquired prior to completion of one year of employment.
  • Fire Prevention Specialist I: Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C, and 2D certificates are desirable.
  • Fire Prevention Specialist I: Fire Investigation 1A, 1B, and 1C certificates are desirable.
  • Fire Prevention Specialist II: Possession of Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C, and 2D certificates.
  • Fire Prevention Specialist II: Possession of Fire Investigation 1A, 1B, and 1C certificates.

Responsibilities

  • Performs technical plan checks to determine compliance with fire and building codes, including checking underground fire mains, fire alarm, and fire suppression systems.
  • Inspects institutions, industries, retail establishments, hotels, apartment and condominium complexes, service stations, schools, hospitals, nursing and convalescent units, and other establishments to secure compliance with codes and regulations pertaining to fire safety.
  • Makes recommendations concerning fire safety for public assemblies.
  • Participates in post-fire investigations and analyses, including collecting and evaluating data and preparing comprehensive reports.
  • Investigates and responds to complaints and requests for information from the public.
  • Attends and/or participates in meetings and conferences.
  • Gives public presentations on fire safety and fire prevention topics.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
