About The Position

BWXT Technical Services Canada (TSC) manages and conducts high-consequence operations within government-owned facilities, where uncompromising discipline is essential. We support Canada’s nuclear, energy, and environmental missions through a comprehensive range of management, operational, and technical services. This position is assigned to the BWXT-led Nuclear Laboratories Partners of Canada (NLPC) contract. The Fire Protection Engineer offers expert knowledge in fire protection and fire department emergency services, ensuring compliance with relevant fire protection codes and standards for equipment and systems. They also notify the appropriate authorities of any violations, facilitating the necessary corrective actions. The Fire Protection Engineer is a professional who uses their engineering and scientific expertise to conduct reviews of new construction plans, inspections to ensure compliance with applicable fire codes, and construction documentation examination. The individual will make recommendations about building design and materials to prevent fires starting and spreading.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (Honors) in Engineering or Applied Science from a university of recognized standing.
  • Education qualifications must be eligible for licensure as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • Registered with Professional Engineers Ontario; OR holds P.Eng. status in Canada. (P.Eng. license can be transferred within provinces in Canada).
  • Ability to identify and evaluate potential fire hazards and risks.
  • Understanding of relevant codes, standards, and regulations governing fire safety.
  • Analyze fire safety documentation for compliance and effectiveness.
  • Ability to create, review, and maintain detailed fire safety documentation.
  • Ensuring accuracy and completeness in fire safety assessments and documentation.
  • Ability to evaluate requests and assess their impact on fire safety.
  • Ability to effectively communicate findings and recommendations regarding exemption requests.
  • Ability to plan, organize/coordinate meetings and projects within the fire service and external groups.

  • Good understanding of the National Building Code, National Fire Code, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and CSA N-293 as well as CSA-N393 standards and their applications, and ability to keep abreast of any changes.

  • Must reside near or be willing to relocate to the Chalk River, Ontario area.

Nice To Haves

  • A degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, Electrical or Civil Engineering is preferred.
  • Two or more years of experience working on fire protection systems or design preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Complete fire safety assessments associated with the fire protection screening process, including the identification and interpretation of code requirements.
  • Complete or review FHAs as required. Conduct and review fire hazard analyses and other fire safety documentation for compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Describe the conditions to consider when inspecting and testing fire protection systems to be able to verify or validate design features. Assist with the preparation/review of the inspection, testing and maintenance procedures for fire equipment/systems in accordance with the applicable codes and standards.
  • Conduct project inspections and witness tests of buildings and fire protection systems to determine compliance with plans and specifications as well as applicable standards and regulations.
  • Assists with oversight of the site's fire protection and fire department emergency services programs and their implementation.
  • Review the adequacy of contractor fire protection programs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, Departmental Orders, standards, guides, and accepted “Improved Risk” practice.
  • Provide technical expertise for the improvement of CRL fire protection equipment/systems (best technology) and their suitability for protection from fire.
  • Assist with fire investigations and other accident/incident investigations as required.
  • Plan and organize meetings and projects within the fire service and external groups. Represent the fire protection program at fire protection meetings, professional conferences, or other related committee meetings.
  • Maintain proficiency in fire protection engineering and fire department emergency services concepts and practices through continued education, training, and periodic review of fire protection codes and standards, which apply to Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and its contractors.
  • Evaluate and review requests for fire safety exemptions and equivalencies.
  • Prepare engineering documents such as Design Requirements, Design Descriptions, Work Activity Plans, Test Plans, and Test Reports.
  • Complete engineering calculations to support and confirm the adequacy of detailed designs.
  • Advise as to fire protection requirements to be incorporated in the design and construction of buildings and structures and fire protection systems.
  • Review plans and specifications to determine compliance with the fire protection requirements of applicable standards and regulations.
  • Work as part of a team to design fire protection systems.
  • Check formal engineering drawings to ensure they convey the engineering design intent.
  • Evaluate the adequacy of fire protection system designs in accordance with applicable fire protection criteria and recommend changes as applicable.
  • Provide guidance based on fire protection engineering principles concerning the use of materials, appliances, systems, equipment and methods of design or construction procedures that are not specifically described by codes and standards, or that vary from the specific requirements in codes and standards, or for which no recognized test procedure has been established.
  • Provide engineering services in support of fire investigation activities to assist in determining cause and effects.
