About The Position

This position performs skilled, specialized work of varying difficulty within the areas of combatting, extinguishing and preventing fires; performing rescue and emergency medical services; performing life safety activities and/or performing special assigned duties in auxiliary services to support the department’s many programs. The work schedule is 24 hours on and 48 hours off with Kelly Days and benefits as outlined in current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Requirements

Graduate from an accredited high school or GED equivalent.
Possess knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and equipment employed in modern firefighting, specialized rescue operations, basic and advanced life support.
Physical ability to perform the duties of firefighting, and capable of working in the conditions involved in fire rescue operations.
Must have and maintain the appropriate class of driver’s license as required by Florida Statutes.
Current State of Florida certified Firefighter and licensed EMT or Paramedic.
Certified in ACLS (Medic) and CPR provider.
Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC or CEVO) with 16 hours of training.
Certified in IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 (most current FEMA Courses)
Basic knowledge of emergency medical, rescue and fire equipment, operation and maintenance.
Knowledge of basic life support (EMT) and advanced life support (Medic) for emergency medical treatment.
Basic knowledge of fire suppression and extinguishing techniques.
Knowledge of defensive driving techniques and methods and ability to execute such methods quickly and efficiently.
Ability to learn the Indian River County’s Street systems and geography.
Ability to learn and follow departmental Emergency Medical Guidelines, Standard Operating Procedures, and Rules & Regulations.
Ability to react quickly and efficiently in emergency situations.
Ability to receive, follow and execute orders from a supervisor.
Ability to follow precise technical instructions in an emergency situation.
Ability to learn and operate relatively complex firefighting, medical, and rescue equipment.
Ability to perform prolonged and difficult work under adverse conditions.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Valid State of Florida driver license (must be at least 18 years old).
Current valid State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance.
Current valid State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), OR Paramedic license. (Applicants submitting a paramedic license MUST include a current ACLS certification.)
Emergency Vehicle operator Course (EVOC/CEVO) certification that reflects 16 hours of training.
Current CPR certification.
IS-100.c, IS-200.c, IS-700.b, and IS-800.d Certificates.

Candidates selected for hire: Will be required to complete drug and medical pre-employment screening.
Who do not possess a valid Florida Paramedic license are required to attain the paramedic certification within 36 months of hire at their own expense and on their own time.
Assistance may be given consideration regarding time away for attending the paramedic program.
Successfully attaining and maintaining a Florida Paramedic certification is a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

Responds to medical, rescue, fire and other emergency and non-emergency calls.
Provides emergency medical treatment to the Basic and Advanced Life Support level of certification.
Performs firefighting activities including operating related fire equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
Performing prolonged and arduous tasks, including heavy lifting weighing more than 75 pounds, while wearing heavy protective equipment under hazardous conditions.
Utilizes all required safety measures when performing assigned job duties.
Inspects assigned emergency vehicles daily; ensures that vehicle is clean, fully equipped and in proper operating condition and in compliance with all state and local laws.
Prepare reports as required.
Attends and participates in company drills and training sessions.
Performs routine station housekeeping and routine office work as required.
Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

11 paid holidays per year ($3000+ in addition to base salary)
Current 3-week Kelly Day cycle per the IAFF Collective Bargaining Agreement.
$6500 annual paramedic incentive, paid biweekly as of October 2025.
An updated $7000 annual paramedic incentive will go into effect October 2026.
Incentive pay is available for those qualified in the following disciplines through a selective process and providing space is available: ARFF Operator, Dive-Rescue Technician, Hazardous Materials Technician, Technical Rescue Technician, MSA G1 Technician, Honor Guard.
Available for qualifying classes once 3 years of service attained provided course meets requirements set in Tuition Reimbursement Policy & Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Up to $5000 may be available per employee for paramedic school tuition reimbursement upon successful certification as a State of Florida paramedic.
