Fire & Life Safety Technician III
About The Position
The Fire & Life Safety Technician III installs, repairs, inspects, and tests smoke and fire suppression systems and other life safety systems. The position troubleshoots alarms, maintains fire alarm wiring, panels, devices, UPS systems, security panels, card readers, and related equipment, and performs general building and preventive maintenance. The technician identifies hazards and defects, documents deficiencies, follows up on corrective actions, and applies National, State, and Local Fire Safety Codes and laws applicable to University buildings. This role is designated as critical personnel and responds to emergencies. The employee participates in standby and on-call rotations, must be physically present at the workplace as needed, and must report to or remain at work during University emergencies or closures. The role may also involve life safety details at sporting and special dignitary events.
Requirements
- Associate's degree or vocational technical training in Fire Science and/or Electronics, with two years of experience maintaining fire and/or life safety equipment; additional experience may offset educational requirements on a one-to-one basis.
- Kentucky certification to inspect and maintain sprinkler systems and/or fire alarm systems, or factory certification on Grinell DCP-200 and/or Grinell Mini-plex 1000 systems, which may substitute for the fire alarm or sprinkler systems certification.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet the University's insurability requirements.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical.
- Working knowledge of current building, fire, and life safety codes related to fire alarms.
- Experience diagnosing fire alarm system issues and maintaining, adjusting, repairing, and replacing fire alarms and related components.
- Ability to respond to emergencies and participate in standby and on-call rotations.
Nice To Haves
- Knowledge of NFPA standards, including NFPA 70 and 72.
- Knowledge of NFPA standards including NFPA 1, 10, 13, 17a/96, 20, 25, 70/70e, 72, 90/90a, 92, 101, 291, 1031, and 2001.
- Ability to work in office, residential (dormitory), commercial, industrial, institutional, and Level I, II, and III laboratory environments while following the relevant procedures and protocols.
- Working knowledge of sprinkler systems; a sprinkler inspectors license is not required.
- Experience maintaining and troubleshooting electrical and low-voltage systems, including security, access control, and fire alarm systems.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, test, maintain, adjust, repair, and replace fire alarm systems and related components.
- Assist with installation or upgrades of fire alarms in University campus buildings.
- Review plans for new and existing fire and life safety systems according to NFPA 1031.
- Perform scheduled and periodic preventive maintenance on fire alarm, detection, notification, and reporting systems in accordance with the PM Program, NFPA, and manufacturer guidelines.
- Identify hazards, defects, and needed adjustments or repairs; document deficiencies and impairments, report them through required processes, and follow up on corrective actions.
- Ensure alarms are installed according to applicable codes and standards and are functioning properly.
- Ensure compliance with applicable IBC, IFC, NFPA, UFC, and Authority Having Jurisdiction requirements.
- Respond to campus emergencies, including fire and sprinkler activations, security and elevator alarms, process alarms, power outages, and other emergencies affecting the campus community.
- Assist with or perform installation, repair, and maintenance of wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge sprinkler systems, standpipes, backflow preventers, fire hydrants, underground systems, and fire pumps.
- Assist with or perform inspections and testing of fire sprinklers, fire pumps, and other water-based equipment.
- Maintain UPS systems, security panels, and card readers for University facilities.
- Perform life safety details during sporting events and special dignitary events.
- Participate in standby and on-call rotations and report to or remain at work during University emergencies or closures.
- Follow local, corporate, and OSHA safety policies and procedures.
