About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) invites applications for a Fire & Life Safety Inspector 2, Risk Management. The incumbent will conduct initial and follow-up fire and life safety inspections, prepare written reports for the State of Nevada Fire Marshal’s Office, Building Proctor, and Fire and Life Safety Manager. They will ensure work orders are submitted for documented violations, and may conduct site inspections with OSH representatives and State and Local Fire Inspectors. The role may also involve assisting the FM Fire Shop with testing and inspection of fire protection systems, ensuring compliance with fire codes and standards, and documenting deficiencies for correction. Follow-up inspections will be conducted within a reasonable timeframe. The position requires preparing a weekly report, attending team and local organization meetings, and coordinating joint inspections with other organizations. A working knowledge of the CHIMERA fire inspection program is expected, with timely entry of all inspections. The inspector will ensure facilities have current evacuation and fire/safety plans, that required drills are conducted and documented, and will assist in the development of these plans. They will witness evacuation drills, record them, and assist in the plan review of building and fire protection system drawings. The role also includes responding to emergencies involving fire, explosions, or hazardous materials incidents, and conducting fire extinguishers and safety training. Continuous professional development through training opportunities is expected to maintain knowledge in areas such as building construction, fire protection systems, plan review, public education, and fire inspection techniques. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in fire science, chemistry, environmental science or closely related field which included a minimum of 9 credits in hazardous waste, chemistry, environmental science or toxicology related courses, and one year of experience performing hazardous materials inspections, hazardous materials site remediation, or hazardous materials consultation; OR one year of experience as a Fire & Life Safety Inspector I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A pre-employment screening test for controlled substances.
  • A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting.
  • A valid driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Certification at the Hazardous Materials Awareness level, issued by the Nevada State Fire Marshal, is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Certification as a Nevada State Fire Inspector I, National Fire Protection Association Fire Inspector I, or as a Fire Inspector I with the International Code Council is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

Responsibilities
