About The Position
The City of Lenexa, Kansas Fire Department is seeking a Fire Lieutenant or Fire Captain for their Fire Prevention division. This position leads, manages, plans, and coordinates fire prevention, life safety, and fire investigation activities. The role involves coordinating with various divisions, departments, outside agencies, and the public, providing complex and responsible staff assistance. Requirements
- Fire Lieutenant: Three years of experience in a career fire service agency as a uniformed firefighter.
- Fire Lieutenant: Fire Fighter I & II certifications.
- Fire Lieutenant: Kansas EMT certification.
- Fire Lieutenant: NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I certification within one year of appointment.
- Fire Lieutenant: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Fire Captain: Five years of experience in a career fire service agency as a uniformed firefighter.
- Fire Captain: At least one year in a company officer role.
- Fire Captain: Fire Fighter I & II certifications.
- Fire Captain: Kansas EMT certification.
- Fire Captain: Associate degree in fire, emergency medical science, or related field.
- Fire Captain: NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I certification.
- Fire Captain: NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I certification.
- Fire Captain: NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I certification.
- Fire Captain: Completion of NFPA 1031 Plans Examiner certification within one year of appointment.
- Fire Captain: Completion of NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator within one year of appointment.
- Fire Captain: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Nice To Haves
- NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I certification within one year of appointment (for Fire Lieutenant).
Responsibilities
- Performs building site plan and fire protection systems reviews for construction projects and conducts meetings with contractors, architects, and owners.
- Interprets fire codes, enforces written fire code requirements, and prepares formal complaints for non-compliance.
- Supervises, manages, and coordinates fire and life safety inspections according to relevant codes and standards.
- Prepares, develops, and participates in fire prevention, life safety programs, and public fire education activities.
- Supervises, manages, and coordinates the fire investigation program for origin and cause determination.
- Recommends training and credentialing for fire investigators.
- Prepares and develops public education programs targeting specific community risks.
- Provides training and instruction to personnel in fire prevention/life safety services, emergency services, and standard practices.
- Drives a City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions.
