About The Position

Under the general direction of the Fire Marshal, performs technical work in fire prevention, inspections and investigations; promotes fire safety through the enforcement of fire codes and public awareness. This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice. Non Essential Employees will not be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee’s Department Head will determine when the employee will be required to work.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of adopted local and state fire codes, and the methods and processes utilized to determine compliance.
  • Skill in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software.
  • Skill in time management and organization
  • Ability to operate necessary equipment, including personal computer, tablet, calculator, copier, facsimile machine and other standard office equipment
  • Ability to operate vehicle.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction, and fire protection system plans and specifications.
  • Ability to compile data and effectively prepare statistical reports.
  • Ability to verify mathematical calculations as they relate to plans, fire protection systems, and life safety elements of a construction project.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service.
  • Ability to perform and meet frequent deadlines.
  • Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and make decisions in accordance with established laws, regulations, ordinances, departmental policies and procedures.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Fire Safety Inspector I Certification.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License with acceptable driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Three years of experience in the construction and/or fire service industry, or related work experience.
  • Certified Florida Fire Inspector II
  • Certified Fire Investigator
  • Certified Fire Officer I

Responsibilities

  • Receive and investigate complaints related to fire hazard or code violations, make recommendations; issue notification of non-compliance; conduct re-inspections.
  • Inspect existing and new structures, remodeling and repairs or alterations of buildings for compliance with fire/life safety requirements.
  • Provide interpretation and guidance pertaining to code requirements and procedures.
  • Act as liaison between the Fire Department and architects, engineers, fire protection coordinators, and permit applicants.
  • May attend and participate in meetings, seminars, workshops, hearings, and/or court proceedings.
  • This position requires regular and reliable attendance and the employee's physical presence at the workplace
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
