About The Position

Performs fire/safety inspections, enforce fire codes, issue permits, and promote public safety to the citizens and community of Aurora, CO. Aurora Fire and Life Safety Inspectors have an important role in helping Aurora Fire Rescue with mitigating fires, increasing safety, and decreasing property damage. This function provides fire and life safety measures for the community by conducting periodic fire inspections of commercial properties on a schedule determined by the risk to life safety in a fire event. The Fire Inspector documents and verifies that fire code compliances are met and maintains records of fire inspections to enforce and document violations. The Fire Inspector also conducts life safety inspections for temporary use or operational permits.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 2 years administrative clerical experience to include substantial contact with the public
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment and procedures regarding electronic communications, scanning, and filing
  • Will need the appropriate knowledge to conduct research on fire codes, prevention technology, and safety equipment as assigned
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, all levels of management including executive staff, citizens, and elected officials
  • Handle complaints, negotiate and solve problems
  • Operate personal computers with related software
  • Skill in conducting research to determine applicable code requirement(s) for general applications
  • Capable of communicating needs and requirements to the public as well as other employees within the city
  • Colorado Driver’s License with a good driving record

Nice To Haves

  • International Code Council (ICC) Certification in the International Fire Code will be required within 6 months of employment

Responsibilities

  • Enforces fire codes and maintains fire protection standards
  • Ensures proper maintenance of automatic and manual fire alarm systems, as well as fire extinguishing systems
  • Educates and communicates with the public concerning fire control measures and safety procedures
  • Monitors and ensures the proper use and handling of hazardous materials
  • Identifies and acts to eliminate fire hazards in buildings, structures, and premises including those under construction
  • Researches, documents, and verifies that code compliances are met
  • Documents fire code violations to identify hazards and enforce corrections
  • Maintains records of inspections to enforce and document violations
  • Issues permits for special processes including hazardous materials usage and control
  • Issues summons
  • May be required to testify in Municipal Court
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
