About The Position

Under the direct supervision of a fire officer, this position is responsible for providing the highest level of protection of life and property to both the fire fighters, as well as the citizens through cooperation and innovative support of the mission of the Amarillo Fire Department. Duties include, but are not limited to Structural, Wildland and Aircraft Rescue Firefighting, providing Emergency Medical Services (EMS), performing Emergency Vehicle Extrications, responding to Hazardous Materials, performing fire apparatus and fire station maintenance, and providing public relations education. Employee shall follow all AFD safety policies and procedures. Provides the highest level of protection of life and property to both the fire fighters, as well as the citizens through cooperation and innovative support of the mission of the Amarillo Fire Department. Demonstrates leadership skills commensurate with training and experience. Administers the highest quality of emergency medical services. Pursues and maintains good relations with citizens. Cleans and maintains fire stations, fire apparatus and equipment in accordance with AFD policies. Maintains proficiency in skills and education related to firefighting, EMS, rescue, and hazardous materials. Participates in annual drills and training. Assists with training and providing instruction, as needed. Participates within the Incident Command System (ICS). Assists in the maintenance and testing of fire hydrants. Performs duties and skills necessary for effective structural, EMS, wildland, vehicle accident, Hazardous Materials (HazMat) and ARFF firefighting operations. Stays familiar with and abides by all Fire Dept. and City rules, operating procedures, and directives. Maintains physical fitness condition to meet minimum job requirements, to be evaluated annually. Occasionally works as an acting driver under the supervision of a company officer. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age to test, but not more than 36 years of age on the date of hire.
  • Must pass firefighter entrant’s physical
  • Must pass Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT)
  • Must pass aerial ladder climb
  • Must pass oral interview(s)
  • Must pass background investigation
  • Must pass criminal history check
  • Must meet all eligibility requirements for certification as Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Structural Firefighter
  • Must meet all eligibility requirements for Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) EMT-Basic certification
  • Must meet vaccination requirements established by the City’s clinical affiliates to participate in the required EMT training.
  • High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • Valid Class C Texas driver’s license
  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Certified Basic Structural Firefighter, NREMT/TDSHS EMT-Basic certification, and National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-100, IS-200, and IS-700, or ability to achieve all within six (6) months of date of employment.
  • Must initially pass, and annually thereafter, the OSHA respirator medical evaluation for both air-purifying and air-supplying respirators.
  • While wearing full firefighter protective clothing and SCBA, the firefighter shall complete AFD Operations-level Consumption Test annually.
  • Minimum physical fitness standards include the demonstrated ability to climb six (6) or more flights of stairs, wearing in excess of 50 lbs. of protective clothing, carrying up to 40lbs of equipment/tools, and breathing through a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) while performing search and rescue tasks for victims ranging from newborns to adults weighing over 200 lbs.
  • Requires working 24-hour shifts with a rotating schedule.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays year-round.
  • Employees shall both complete the assigned Position Task Book (PTB) and acquire a Texas Class “B” Exempt Driver’s License within one year of employment.
  • Continued employment is also dependent upon successful completion of the probation period, maintaining physical/fitness requirements, and satisfactory job performance ratings.
  • Non-offensive tattoos allowed on duty, but not on eyes, face, head, scalp, or neck.
  • No body piercing shall be visible while on-duty or representing the Department.
  • Alteration to any area of the body that is visible in any authorized uniform or attire that is a deviation from normal anatomical features, and which is not medically required is expressly prohibited.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Knowledge of basic math principles, calculating weight and volumes, and mechanical reasoning
  • Knowledge and ability to safely operate all firefighting apparatus and equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern emergency medical techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern firefighting and rescue techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of fire department-related laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.
  • Ability to effectively work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work under hazardous and adverse weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.
  • Ability to operate basic computer applications and equipment.
  • Ability to meet requirements to achieve and maintain required licenses and certifications.
