About The Position

This is a promotional opportunity for current City of Oxnard Fire Department employees. Under the general supervision of a Company Officer, the Fire Engineer responds to fire suppression and other emergencies by driving and operating fire apparatus and rescue equipment. Responsibilities include ensuring the operational readiness of all company fire apparatus and equipment, performing fire prevention inspections and code enforcement, and participating in fire and life safety educational programs. This journey-level position is responsible for independently performing the full scope of assigned duties, including driving, operating, inspecting, and maintaining fire apparatus and equipment. Fire Engineers may also train lower-level personnel and must exercise judgment and initiative. This role is distinguished from a Firefighter by the specialized and complex work performed and a higher degree of complex decision-making in the absence of supervision.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
15 accredited college units in Fire Technology/Fire Science (transcripts must be provided).
Three (3) years of full-time paid firefighter experience with the Oxnard Fire Department.
California Driver's License meeting requirements set forth in California Vehicle Code Section 12804.11.
A Class C License with an endorsement issued by the Oxnard Fire Department as described in Section 12804.9.
A Class A or Restricted Class A License with the appropriate endorsements as described in Section 12804.12.
A Commercial or Noncommercial Class B License with the appropriate endorsements as described in Section 12804.10.
Engine/Pump Certification.
Pump Certification.
Written Exam.
Engine/Pumping Manipulative Exam.
Oxnard Driving Evaluation Form (Engine).
Truck Certification.
Pierce Written Test.
Pierce Manipulative Exam.
ALF/LTI Written Test.
ALF/LTI Manipulative Exam.
Oxnard Driving Evaluation Form (Pierce OR ALF).
Completion of the Following Specialized Equipment Operational Procedures Checklists & Driving Evaluation: HM 87, USAR 68, OES 396, Light and Air 85.
Oxnard Driving Evaluation (HazMat OR US&R).
Proficiency and comfort with computer use for office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based tools.
Regular and reliable attendance.
Effective communication skills.

Responsibilities

Drives fire apparatus to locations of fires and other emergencies, including vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, rescue of trapped victims, and medical aid.
Operates fire apparatus, ensuring proper setup and appropriate hose lays, and providing safe operating water pressure to suppress fires.
Operates rescue equipment to free trapped victims and administers medical treatment to ill or injured persons.
Operates a variety of tools including chain saws, extrication equipment, extinguishers, pike poles, rubbish hooks, extension ladders, pick-head axes, irons, and other related tools.
Performs functions in specialized areas such as ladder truck operations, hazardous materials first response, urban search and rescue, ocean rescue, wild-land firefighting, high-rise firefighting, confined space rescue, public education, and driver training.
Inspects and tests fire apparatus and other equipment for mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical condition to ensure operational readiness.
Performs maintenance and minor repairs as necessary, updates maintenance records, and reports the need for repairs.
Communicates the operational readiness of apparatus and equipment.
Participates in drills and assists with the training of firefighters.
Responds to questions and concerns from the general public, provides information, and resolves complaints.
Participates in public education programs related to fire prevention and safety and conducts station tours.
May perform general maintenance of Departmental facilities.
Demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures, work methods, and safety requirements associated with assigned duties.
