About The Position

Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) offers building & landscape maintenance, and custodial services to Harvard faculties and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with customer-determined standards. As such, FMO operates as an in-house alternative to contractor services and therefore must manage itself under the same principles that guide any successful maintenance service business.

Requirements

  • Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrician license for minimum period of five years.
  • Valid State driver’s license and driving history satisfactory to meet Campus Services standards.
  • Minimum five years’ experience installing and maintaining high and low voltage systems with recent experience in the installation, operation, and repair of all types of building fire alarm systems centralized battery-powered lighting systems, emergency generators, remote central station fire alarm monitoring equipment, and associated devices.
  • Experience and proficiency in the use of industry-recognized diagnostic testing equipment.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations required to accurately size and install system components and devices.
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed plans, drawings, specifications, operating manuals and other written materials associated with this trade.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with peers and customers.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in desktop and smartphone technology platforms and applications.
  • Required to supply a complete set of hand tools.
  • Must be willing to work in research laboratory environments and around hazardous materials.
  • Must be willing to accept a reasonable amount of overtime in support of group business needs.
  • Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrician license

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with equipment diagnostics, bar-coding, and related technologies desired.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs building life-safety equipment and systems, including fire alarm systems, centralized emergency lighting systems and remote central station monitoring equipment.
  • Performs all installation, maintenance, inspection and testing in accordance with applicable standards and requirements of the National Fire Protection Association, Life Safety Code (Massachusetts State Building Code) and/or established compliance requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Interprets and updates mechanical plans, drawings and prints as necessary.
  • Assists in the inspection and testing of other fire safety systems including fire alarms, emergency generators, extinguishers and suppression systems, fire escapes, and hydrants.
  • Performs other core skills of the trades and related duties as required.
  • Observes and complies with all standard safety codes and practices and performs work in accordance with recognized trade and University standards.
  • Assists and advises customers on progress / status of work and provides responsive and effective customer support in all phases of FSS and building maintenance operations.
  • Wears a clean, neat uniform and maintains a professional image at all times.
  • Wears safety equipment and clothing when appropriate and/or required.
  • May be assigned to work independently or as part of a multi-trade team under the guidance and direction of the FSS Supervisor, and/or Working Foreperson.
  • May be assigned to perform any or all aspects of the FMO fire electrician position.
