About The Position

Fire Apparatus Technicians are responsible for performing maintenance, major/heavy & minor/light repairs, modifications and overhauls to Fire and Municipal vehicles and equipment. These duties are accomplished by accurately diagnosing, examining, testing, repairing and rebuilding Fire and Municipal vehicles and equipment. The work locations may vary between light repair service shops and heavy overhaul shops as well as in the field using a service truck. This may include duties such as maintenance of hoists and shop equipment.

Requirements

Completion of the (12th) school grade
Completion of the Heavy Equipment Technician apprenticeship program
Alberta Heavy Equipment Technician certificate, preferably with an interprovincial red seal equivalent
Class 3 Alberta operator's license with air brake endorsement and a City of Edmonton drivers permit (or must attain upon commencement). May be required to obtain a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate
Two years experience as a journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician.
Must have proven experience with (and knowledge of) electrical systems, electronic controls, hydraulic systems, suspension, air / hydraulic brakes & diesel engines/powertrain
Medium and heavy work requires frequent lifting up to 100 pounds
Ability to understand, interpret and exercise oral and written instructions, diagrams, drawings
Complete knowledge of trade and related equipment and ability to apply it in locating, diagnosing and repairing equipment malfunctions
Skills in problem solving, learning on the job and adapting to a changing work environment
Demonstrate proficiency in using Fleet Management system software
Ability to foster strong working relationships
Familiarity with diagnostic software and the ability to utilize it
Good Knowledge with occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the trade

Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
Maintain a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Responsibilities

Repair, overhaul, service, inspect, commission new equipment & attachments, diagnose the complete range of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, structural and all other failures occurring to heavy and light duty units, fire units, equipment components and attachments common to the municipal utility fleets and fire units
Perform road calls and call out for emergency repairs on equipment including the ERD to keep the fire apparatus operational
Complete field repairs as assigned or needed. Deliver units to commercial vendors, road and field test units, and operate a wide range of units to assist in diagnosis and repair
Review branch maintenance information systems, repair manuals, technical bulletins, operating manuals, corporate, department and branch procedural manuals, schematics, material safety data sheets, safety handbooks and blueprints in order to accurately diagnose, repair and order parts for the jobs assigned
Complete the required administration procedures and forms to ensure the proper recording and communication of work recommended and/or completed (PM inspection sheets, major repair authorization forms, provincial certification forms, time entries, police inspections, etc…) using Fleet Management System Software (EX: M5, or any other software required) to perform data entry and time entry
Attend and participate in safety and information meetings
Attend and participate in health and safety training and be knowledgeable about chemicals and workplace hazards
Advise co-workers, forepersons, controllers, leadership & management of any health and safety concerns
Attend and participate in environmental training, follow approved environmental operating procedures and advise leadership staff, management of any work related environmental concerns
Greet and assist customers in defining and identifying problems and obtaining services offered by the branch
Answer phones and provide backup to the office and leadership staff as required
Perform other related duties as assigned
