About The Position

Under general supervision, performs highly skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance of specialized Fire and Rescue Department apparatus, fire pumps, aerial ladders, breathing apparatus, small engines, and related equipment. This position is considered an essential employee and operates on a rotating on-call schedule to ensure 24-hour coverage. Responds to emergency incident scenes, which may include working after hours, nights, weekends, and holidays, with both scheduled and unscheduled overtime potentially required.

Requirements

• Proficiency in the diagnosis, adjustment, and repair of all assigned vehicles/equipment systems.
• Ability to learn job-related technical information and communicate it to co-workers.
• Ability to drive Fire vehicles and equipment for testing.
• Ability to lift a minimum of fifty pounds on several occasions.
• Ability to bend, stoop, and climb in confined areas of vehicles.
• Ability to withstand heights.
• Completion of the tenth grade.
• Five years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and/or specialized automotive equipment.
• Two years of the required experience must have been at a level comparable to Automotive Mechanic II.
• Possession of a set of personal hand tools commonly used in the automotive section to which assigned is required upon appointment.
• Must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B) in the state of residence or be able to obtain same within six months of appointment to the position.
• May be required to provide copies of driving record periodically for verification of driving status.
• The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check, credit check and sanctions screening to the satisfaction of the employer.
• Employee must be comfortable working at elevated positions above 8 feet.
• Employees must be able to climb under, in, out and top of specialized fire apparatus.
• Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds on more than one occasion.
• Must be able to operate a wide variety of motor vehicles including specialized fire apparatus.
• Visual acuity is a necessity.

Nice To Haves

• Related automotive technical education or trade training above the high school level may be substituted for experience on an hour for hour basis.
• Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications: Fire Apparatus Technician – Level 1 (F1, F2), Ambulance Technician – Level 1 (E0, E1).
• Employees must obtain and maintain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications within 18 months of assignment to the position.

Responsibilities

• Detects, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical and electrical problems in Fire and Rescue apparatus, pumpers, aerial devices, and boats and outboard motors.
• Performs complete fire pump overhauls and rebuilds power transfer transmissions, replacing damaged pump plumbing, rebuilding water valves and rebuilding pumper water tanks.
• Rebuilds aerial ladders and diagnoses aerial hydraulics.
• Performs maintenance and repairs breathing air compressors and generators.
• Performs mandated NFPA Pump Testing.
• Repairs and replaces aerial cables, pre-piped waterways, and stabilization jacks.
• Performs custom fabrication for Fire and Rescue Apparatus, including designing, laying out, and building brackets, boxes, and other equipment from aluminum or steel using MIG, TIG, or stick welding.
• Diagnoses and repairs Fire and Rescue Department rescue boats and outboard motors, power winches, and other miscellaneous small equipment.
• Prepares new vehicles for service, including installing lights, sirens, custom-built compartments, radios, MCT’s, and intercom systems.
• Responds to major emergency incidents when Fire and Rescue vehicles will be in prolonged operations.
