About The Position

Under the general direction of the Fire Alarm Unit Leader, the responsibilities of the Fire Alarm Technician include but are not limited to performing inspection, service, repairs, installation, and programming of commercial fire alarm systems. This role also involves troubleshooting and fault diagnostics of fire alarm devices, wiring, and software. The technician may supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate personnel and assist in training staff members. Additionally, the role requires providing field oversight and QA/QC review of contractor work, verifying compliance with applicable Codes and Standards, and witnessing inspections and tests to ensure installations and repairs are completed properly. The technician will also set priorities, schedules, and coordinate work by contractors and in-house personnel, regularly visiting and inspecting sites. They may also issue change orders to original specifications upon supervisory approval to accommodate field conditions or correct specification errors.

Requirements

  • Six years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations for light, heat and/or power distribution, traffic signals, fire alarm detection or communication systems.
  • Four years of experience as described above, and 60 credits towards a degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of experience as described above, and two years of full-time training in an acceptable electrical program in an accredited technical school.
  • Completion of an apprentice program, at least three years in length, in the electrical trade or electrical inspection and either three years of experience as described above.
  • Completion of an apprentice program, at least three years in length, in the electrical trade or electrical inspection and one year of experience as described above and 60 credits or two years of education as described above.
  • A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the New York State Education Law.
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to the above requirements.
  • To be eligible for placement to Assignment Level II, individuals other than licensed professional engineers or registered architects must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, at least one year of experience in a supervisory capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform inspection, service, repairs, installation, and programming of commercial fire alarm systems.
  • Independently perform troubleshooting and fault diagnostics of fire alarm devices, wiring, and software.
  • May supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate personnel and assist in training staff members.
  • Provide field oversight and QA/QC review of contractor work and verify compliance with applicable Codes and Standards.
  • Witnesses and conducts inspections and tests to verify that installations and repairs are completed in a workmanlike manner and follow good engineering practices.
  • Set priorities, schedules and coordinates work by contractors and in-house personnel.
  • Regularly visits and inspects sites.
  • May issue change orders to original specifications to accommodate changing field conditions or to correct specification errors or omissions; upon Supervisory approval of recommendations, prepares change orders.
