About The Position

This role supports the premier research center in the Baltimore/Washington area by providing fire alarm maintenance support. The fire alarm system technician will work with a small team to maintain, repair, service, modify, test, troubleshoot, and replace fire/life safety equipment throughout APL facilities. Responsibilities include working closely with facilities operations and construction teams, the APL fire department, and project design and management to provide essential system information and status. The technician will also collaborate with project management, facilities management, and building occupants for coordination and execution of activities, and communicate with outside vendors and consultants on project-related issues.

Requirements

  • Possess a High School diploma or equivalency
  • Have experience in Electrical and/or Fire Alarm Systems
  • Can optimally communicate both orally and in writing on matters concerning fire protection and life safety and electrical systems in regards to testing of system applications, reporting on system conditions, conveying mitigation options for impaired systems and other complex technical issues.
  • Possess the ability to read and interpret blueprints
  • Possess an in-depth knowledge of electronic theories and practices as they apply to one or more complex electrical systems.
  • Have professional knowledge of National Fire Protection Association standards, other related codes and standards
  • Possess the ability to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms
  • Meet the physical demands of this role to include the ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions with the ability to frequently lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds
  • Have the ability to work the day shift Monday through Friday with occasional overtime and response to emergency call-ins as needed
  • Requires valid state-of-residence driver’s license in good standing.
  • Hold U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status, as required to access APL's facilities and networks, subject to applicable laws.

Nice To Haves

  • Possess Masters electrician license
  • Possess NICET certification
  • Possess 10 or more years journeyperson or equivalent experience with life safety fire alarm systems
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing Maximo CMMS

Responsibilities

  • Respond to system supervisory or trouble alarms, make repairs and/or engage with vendors to facilitate repairs.
  • Determine the cause of system supervisory/trouble alarms and effect repairs if possible.
  • Complete after action reports in the work management system detailing the nature of the issue and resolution.
  • Prioritize and coordinate workflow with supervisor.
  • Monitor the operation of the systems and analyze system alarms to take vital steps for ensuring continuity of fire alarm system coverage.
  • Respond to system issues in a timely and effective manner.
  • Perform scheduled inspections, testing and routine preventative maintenance of fire alarm systems.
  • Participate in fire alarm system testing.
  • Utilize APL vehicles in the course of daily operation.
