About The Position

Bow Valley College is seeking a collaborative, student-centered, and detail-oriented Financial Support Advisor to support students in navigating financial aid programs, institutional awards, and financial wellness resources throughout their educational journey. Reporting to the Manager, Financial Empowerment, the Financial Support Advisor serves as a primary point of contact for students seeking guidance on government financial aid, scholarships, bursaries, and financial literacy supports. The successful candidate will provide high-quality advising and customer service from initial inquiry through to program completion, helping students understand complex financial aid processes, access available funding opportunities, and build the financial knowledge needed to achieve their academic and personal goals. This role requires strong relationship-building skills, sound judgment, and the ability to support a diverse student population in a fast-paced and collaborative post-secondary environment.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1-3 years advising experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered
  • Knowledge of applicable systems (e.g. student management systems, government financial aid systems, provincial financial aid portals, Microsoft applications)
  • Ability to interpret and implement financial aid and awards legislation, policy, and procedures
  • Strong communication, advising, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work with diverse multi-cultural adult students using sound judgment and client-centred approach
  • Ability to liaise and build effective relationships with internal stakeholders, external agencies, and government partners
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills
  • Presentation/facilitation skills

Responsibilities

  • Provide student-centered advising and support related to government financial aid, scholarships, bursaries, and financial wellness programs.
  • Guide students through funding applications, eligibility requirements, appeals, and reporting obligations while helping resolve application issues or delays.
  • Deliver support through one-on-one advising, workshops, presentations, phone, email, and virtual interactions.
  • Promote financial wellness by facilitating educational initiatives focused on budgeting, tax benefits, savings programs, and fraud awareness, while connecting students to appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Support the administration of financial aid and institutional awards by processing applications, maintaining accurate student records, confirming registration, and updating information within government and institutional systems.
  • Assist with bursary and scholarship adjudication and disbursement while ensuring compliance with applicable policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with Student Accounts, academic departments, and internal stakeholders to resolve student issues, maintain data integrity, and support efficient service delivery.
  • Contribute to reporting, data tracking, and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance processes and the overall student experience.
  • Develop strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, government representatives, and external partners to support student success and financial empowerment.
  • Liaise with funding agencies and collaborate across departments to address complex student situations and ensure accurate, timely support.
  • Participate in Open Houses, orientations, workshops, and other outreach initiatives that increase awareness of financial aid, awards, and financial wellness resources.
  • Stay informed on sector trends and best practices through professional networks, institutional collaboration, and ongoing engagement within the post-secondary community.
