About The Position

The Financial Reporting Director serves as an authoritative accounting expert for Boston Medical Center, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all external and internal financial reporting functions across the organization. Reporting to the VP Controller, this role operates with significant independence and exercises direct supervisory responsibility over the Senior Accountant – Financial Reporting. Externally, the Director works with the Controller to oversee the organization’s audit engagements, nonprofit tax compliance at the federal and state levels, bond reporting, ratings agency interactions, and CHIA submissions. Internally, the Director leads consolidated month-end close reporting, supports the development of Board and Committee financial materials, and establishes and maintains accounting policies in accordance with US GAAP. This position collaborates closely with the Accounting, Treasury, Finance, Development, and Leadership teams and has broad impact on the organization’s financial credibility, regulatory compliance, and reporting infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field and a minimum of 7 years of related experience in financial reporting, external audit coordination, or tax compliance; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
  • Knowledge of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) as applied to complex financial transactions, consolidated reporting, and nonprofit entities.
  • Knowledge of federal and state nonprofit taxa compliance requirements, including IRS Form 990 preparation and review processes.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent reporting deadlines—including audit, tax, bond, and close cycles—and adjust priorities as needed to meet submission timelines.
  • Ability to review and interpret financial statements, supporting schedules, and draft tax returns for completeness and accuracy.
  • Skill in communicating technical accounting concepts clearly in written and verbal form to finance and non-finance audiences, including senior leadership, Board members, and the external auditors.
  • Ability to identify internal control gaps and develop and document corrective process and control procedures.
  • Skill in evaluating financial reporting workflows and implementing technology or process changes that improve efficiency and reduce manual effort.
  • Proficiency in accounting software systems, with the ability to apply system functionality to financial close, consolidation, and reporting processes.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for external auditors; leads the planning, coordination, and timely completion of the annual consolidated system audit and all ancillary audits. Ensures audit deliverables are complete and accurate, and that underlying books, records, and supporting documentation are organized and provided to auditors throughout the engagement.
  • Oversees the annual tax return calendar and ensures timely completion of all required tax filings, including annual 990s, state filings, and other miscellaneous returns. Coordinates directly with external tax advisors, facilitates provision of relevant financial records, reviews draft returns, and manages the review and approval process through final submission.
  • Prepares and contributes to financial materials for Board and Committee meetings and other internal leadership forums. Works to standardize reporting formats and automate report generation where possible to improve consistency and reduce manual efforts.
  • Coordinates quarterly and annual external bond reporting and CHIA reporting in partnership with treasury and entity finance teams. Prepares and reviews financial data used for ratings agency presentations and state government outreach, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of all external-facing financial communications.
  • Leads consolidated monthly close reporting in coordination with subsidiary entities, the budget team, and finance functions. Reviews month-end results for accuracy and drives ongoing improvements to the close process for greater efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Functions as a system-wide technical accounting resource, interpreting and communicating the appropriate US GAAP treatment for complex transactions, new business activities, and significant one-time events. Partners with operational and finance teams to ensure accounting positions are consistently and correctly applied.
  • Maintains effective control procedures across all financial reporting and tax processes. Partners with accounting and operational areas to identify control gaps, formalize process and control documentation, and implement improvements that reduce risk and strengthen the internal control environment.
  • Continuously identifies opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of financial reporting, audit, and tax functions through process redesign and technology enablement. Evaluates and implements tools or system enhancements that reduce manual effort and improve output quality.
