About The Position

The Financial Navigator in the Enterprise Revenue Cycle department, specifically within the Oncology service line, is responsible for evaluating new patients with cancer to identify financial barriers to their care. This role involves investigating insurance benefits, identifying coverage gaps, and exploring options to assist patients with their financial needs. The Financial Navigator develops financial plans with patients and their families, acting as a patient advocate throughout their treatment journey. They work to resolve potential out-of-pocket expenses for patients and help them overcome financial obstacles. A key aspect of this role is ensuring patient satisfaction by identifying needs for financial resources like Foundation and Grant Assistance, and maintaining records of these referrals. The position also involves pre-screening eligible patients for COBRA premium assistance, referring patients to other specialists such as Oncology Nurse Navigators, Social Workers, and the PAP Team when appropriate, and maintaining accurate financial reports for patient assistance programs. Additionally, the Financial Navigator is responsible for organizing community education on Financial Navigation services, assisting in the development of policies and procedures related to financial practices, and serving as a community advocate for awareness of insurance market trends and oncology resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field or 4 years of insurance related experience required.
  • Strong understanding and experience with government safety net programs, Health Insurance policies, external assistance programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in addressing patient financial issues.
  • Must be proficient with medical terminology.
  • Must be familiar with clinical considerations as these relate to oncology services.
  • Extensive analytical skills and focus on details.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.

Nice To Haves

  • Microsoft Excel, Word, Epic experience preferred.
  • Databases, hospital registration, billing and clinical systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates new patients with cancer for financial barriers to care and investigates insurance benefits and potential gaps of insurance coverage.
  • Develops a financial plan with patients and their families and serves as a patient advocate during the process of their treatment.
  • Works with patients and develops resolutions to potential patient financial out of pocket exposure and helps them plan and overcome these obstacles.
  • Responsible for patient satisfaction and identifies potential needs with regards to financial resources such as enrollment with Foundation and Grant Assistance.
  • Maintains records of these financial referrals to track and monitor these funds.
  • Pre-screen eligible patients who need assistance with COBRA premiums.
  • Refer patients to Oncology Nurse Navigators, Social Workers, PAP Team when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate reimbursement/financial reports for each patient participating in patient assistance programs.
  • Organizes education for the community regarding Financial Navigation and the services provided.
  • Assists with development of policies, procedures, and standards reflective of current financial practices.
  • Serves as an advocate within the community for awareness of current trends and fluctuations within the insurance market and champions oncology resources/services.
