Financial & Data Analyst

About The Position

Most entry-level finance jobs ask you to report what happened. This one asks you to explain why it happened — and what we should do next. You'll work directly with our CFO and executive team on the questions that move a manufacturing business: What does this product really cost to make? Why did margin change last quarter? What happens if we raise prices 4%? Where is the market heading? Then you'll help us turn the answers into automated, AI-powered reporting so the next answer comes faster. About Hirsh Industries Hirsh Industries has been making steel products since 1924, when our roots began as the W.P. Johnson Company. Today we design and manufacture office furniture, filing and storage products, lockers, and related steel goods, with headquarters in West Des Moines, Iowa and a manufacturing operation in Dover, DE and Mexicali, Mexico. We are a hands-on, mid-sized manufacturer — big enough to have complex, interesting problems, and small enough that a strong analyst's work gets seen, used, and acted on by the people who run the company.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Data Analytics, Statistics, Mathematics, or another quantitative field.
  • 0–4 years of professional experience. Internships, co-ops, and serious academic or personal projects count.
  • Coursework or experience in managerial or cost accounting — you understand the difference between reporting results and explaining them.
  • Strong Excel modeling skills and comfort working with large, imperfect datasets.
  • Genuine curiosity about AI and analytics tools. If you've used them to build something, we want to see it.
  • The ability to turn numbers into a clear story for people who don't live in spreadsheets.
  • Sound judgment and integrity with data: you check your work, flag what doesn't tie, and protect confidential information.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with a BI tool such as Tableau or Power BI.
  • Exposure to an ERP system such as SAP, or to a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Plans to pursue a CPA, CMA, or MBA.

Responsibilities

  • Explain what drives profit. Build revenue bridges that break performance into price, volume, and mix; run budget-versus-actual variance analysis; and help design the KPI scorecards leadership uses to run the business.
  • Figure out what things really cost. Build product cost models, develop time-driven activity-based costing, and separate fixed from variable costs so we understand our operating leverage and true product and customer profitability.
  • Shape pricing decisions. Model the margin and volume impact of pricing changes and help the commercial team decide where, when, and how much.
  • Build the plan. Support the annual budget, rolling forecasts, and scenario models — with clear, documented assumptions.
  • Look outside our walls. Research market size, customer segments, and competitors to inform strategy and growth decisions.
  • Help the supply chain run smarter. Partner with our supply chain leader on analytics such as inventory, service levels, and freight when extra analytical horsepower is needed.
  • Automate the routine. Convert recurring manual reports into automated, AI-assisted reporting so the team spends its time on judgment, not copy-and-paste — while keeping our data secure and our numbers right.
