How you'll contribute A Financial Counselor who excels in this role: Maintains and processes assigned patient accounts; counsels patients on admission, discharge, and payment options while handling confidential information. Counsels patients or responsible parties to establish appropriate payment arrangements. Contacts patients prior to admission to obtain missing information, including required signatures for financial responsibility. Estimates and communicates the patient’s financial responsibility prior to services. Establishes payment arrangements for patients unable to pay estimated balances at discharge; escalates prior payment issues to management. Ensures completeness of pre-admission and admission documentation; follows up to secure missing information before admission. Identifies patients with prior payment concerns and notifies leadership before admission. Interprets insurance benefits and calculates estimated patient responsibility based on expected services and length of stay. Clearly explains financial obligations and secures signed acknowledgment of responsibility. Collects payments in advance, at time of service, or at discharge; documents payment agreements in accordance with policies. Uses age-appropriate communication techniques when interacting with patients and families. Maintains knowledge of regulatory requirements, including Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, Veterans Administration, and other programs. Collects and manages cash receipts in accordance with established controls. Collects deductibles, co-pays, and non-covered service charges. Maintains and balances assigned cash drawer. Prepares and submits daily cash reports and deposit documentation. Verifies insurance eligibility and determines patient financial responsibility, including self-pay processes when applicable. Ensures cash receipts reconcile accurately with the cash drawer. Prepares and delivers deposits in accordance with procedures. Operates and maintains assigned equipment and work area. Ensures equipment is properly used and maintained to prevent damage or excessive wear. Demonstrates proficiency in patient financial systems (e.g., Paragon) and supporting software. Maintains organized and orderly work areas. Participates in departmental and hospital support activities, including standby and recall assignments as needed. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; advanced education preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of business or related experience including bookkeeping with use of calculating equipment and collection of monies is required.
  • Proficient in use of software programs.
  • Excellent customer service and telephone skills are a must.
  • Ability to problem-solve effectively and handle stress in a positive manner
  • Maintain harmonious relationships with nursing personnel, medical staff, hospital administration, and all hospital departments
  • Ability to work varying shifts (evenings, weekends, holidays)

Nice To Haves

  • Hospital or medical business office experience preferred.
  • Medical terminology preferred.
  • Familiarity with organization and functions of each hospital department
