About The Position

The Financial Counselor will schedule appointments with patients/guarantors, etc. to discuss the financial tools available, the insurance application process, and the financial application process. They will process applications for Medicaid, Vermont Health Connect Insurance plans (The Market Place ACA plans), and financial assistance. The role requires demonstrating understanding of patient account balances, insurance coverage, patient liabilities, and financial assistance. The Financial Counselor will effectively utilize Hospital information systems, Microsoft Office applications, and other software tools necessary to perform assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must complete online coursework and examination to obtain Certified Vermont Assister certification within 30 days of hire and maintain certification as required
  • Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Patient advocacy skills
  • Demonstrates empathy, professionalism, and respect when assisting patients and families with financial and insurance-related matters
  • Self-motivated and functions independently
  • Demonstrates problem-solving and problem-prevention skills
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and HIPAA compliance

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Human Services, Social Services, or related field
  • Two (2) years’ customer service experience working with diverse demographics, including patients in crisis
  • Two (2) years’ healthcare billing, insurance, patient access, registration, financial counseling, or related healthcare experience
  • Two (2) years’ experience with Microsoft Office Suite
