About The Position

As a Financial Counselor, you will ensure that no one feels lost or unsupported when navigating insurance coverage, payment plans, or assistance programs. Your work will directly reduce stress for patients, improve access to care, and help our hospital maintain its commitment to serving the community with dignity.

Requirements

  • High school degree or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience with the Nevada Psychiatric/Substance Abuse Insurance Market required.
  • Experience in healthcare billing, insurance verification, or patient financial counseling (hospital setting preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of medical insurance plans, government assistance programs, and payment plan structures.
  • Exceptional communication skills—able to explain complex financial information in a clear, empathetic way.
  • Proficiency with hospital billing systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • A calm, solutions-focused approach when working with patients under stress.

Responsibilities

  • Accessing insurance website to verify insurance benefits.
  • Establishing calls in computer system when required.
  • Preparing billing packets.
  • Interviewing patients to verify demographic and insurance information and collect out-of-pocket (OOP) costs.
  • Meet with patients and families to explain insurance benefits, out-of-pocket costs, and available financial assistance programs.
  • Guide patients through applications for Medicaid, charity care, or other aid programs, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to coordinate financial solutions that support patient care plans.
  • Maintain detailed, confidential records in compliance with HIPAA and hospital policies.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve the patient financial experience and streamline processes.
  • Prepare and balance outpatient and inpatient daily stats and update reports accordingly.
  • Access report daily to resolve claim issues.
  • May require calling patients for COB issues or calling insurance companies for claim status, once resolved, close work ticket and add collection notes.
  • Prepare deposit for any cash or checks received at physical location.
  • Review AR for overpayments and if applicable prepare patient or insurance refund.
  • Work claims based on several reports distributed by Manager to ensure time claim payment.
  • Contact patients for balances owed after insurance payments are received.
