Requirements

  • High School Diploma, some college or equivalent education desirable.
  • Previous registration or insurance verification experience desirable.
  • Two or more years in a health-related field, preferably in insurance verification.
  • Excellence in customer service skills.
  • Excellence in interview skills.
  • Excellence in data accumulation skills.
  • Keyboard skills @45 wpm.
  • Medical terminology preferred.
  • Meets attendance and punctuality guidelines.
  • Meets annual mandatory education requirements.
  • Meets hospital-required health screenings.

Responsibilities

  • Verify patient insurance coverage, obtain pre-certifications and authorizations.
  • Verify coverage eligibility for the date of service and confirm services are covered under the plan.
  • Coordinate benefits among multiple payors and determine patient financial responsibility (co-payments, co-insurance, deductibles).
  • Conduct pre-admit telephone interviews to ensure accurate demographic and insurance information is entered into the Hospital Information System.
  • Advise patients of their financial responsibility due at the time of service.
  • Print/review schedules, insurance and admissions reports from Star and EPIC to gather information for financial investigations.
  • Review Emergency Room Visit Payer reports for outpatient financial investigations.
  • Verify insurance coverage and benefits via telephone, internet or fax, documenting findings in Star registration.
  • Note effective date of policy, subscriber, co-pay, deductible, CPT codes, and in/out-of-work benefits.
  • Gather data necessary for timely reimbursement.
  • Inform patients/guarantors of financial responsibility due at time of service.
  • Refer patients/guarantors to Director of Patient Access for self-pay payments when necessary.
  • Ensure patients receive appropriate insurance authorizations and/or referrals per Managed Care guidelines.
  • Utilize excellent customer service skills when interacting with patients, doctor’s offices, and insurance companies.
  • Advise patients to arrive with insurance cards, patient ID, and prescription (if needed), and inform them of required co-pays, co-insurance, deductibles, authorizations, and referrals.
  • Be knowledgeable of MMC Financial Assistance programs.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient, employee, department, and hospital information, including computer passwords.
  • Follow downtime policy and procedures during scheduled and unscheduled downtimes.
  • Monitor out/inpatient reports to ensure policies/procedures have been followed and make corrections to registrations or authorizations.
  • Accept additional related duties with appropriate training in a positive manner.
  • Devote attention and resources to provide the best customer service possible.

  • Utilize all available resources to reach sound decisions.
