About The Position

The Financial Analyst is responsible for supporting the accurate preparation and maintenance of financial reports, statements and budgets to advise leadership and support strategic decision making. Reporting to the VP Finance, the Financial Analyst will work as a member of the Finance team to support the delivery of quality services and the continuous improvement of financial accounting systems and procedures.

Requirements

  • Community College diploma in accounting
  • CPA designation (or in final stages of completion). CFA/MBA may be considered
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in full cycle accounting
  • Adequate knowledge about the ASNPO (Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations)
  • Experience in budget development, monitoring, and financial reporting practices
  • Proficiency in computerized accounting systems and financial software (e.g., Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, ADP, or similar)
  • Academic Certificate(s)
  • Criminal reference check
  • Valid driver’s license/vehicle
  • Proof that the successful candidate has received both doses of a Health Canada approved COVID 19 vaccine at least 14 days before the first day of work, subject always to Ottawa Salus’ duty to accommodate under the Ontario Human Rights Code
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting processes, including accounts payable and receivable, journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end/year-end closing
  • Working knowledge of Ministry of Health reporting requirements, including MIS financial, statistical, and trial balance reporting
  • Solid knowledge of financial analytics and techniques to interpret and present complex financial data
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation, policies, and standards applicable to the not-for-profit, supportive housing, social service, and health care sectors
  • Comprehensive understanding of accounting principles and financial controls to ensure accuracy and compliance

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with management to monitor budgets for annual operating and capital plans in alignment with strategic goals and objectives
  • Ensure accurate and timely internal and external reporting of financial activities
  • Analyze staffing plans and FTE data to support management in determining program staffing needs and costs
  • Support the general ledger system and ensure its accuracy and completeness
  • Support the preparation of internal monthly financial statements and annual audited financial statements
  • Prepare and reconcile quarterly financial reports including the MIS and SRI reports to Ontario Health, the Ministry of Health, City of Ottawa and other funders as required
  • Prepare, reconcile and ensure timely submission of annual reports including the Registered Charities Information Return, Employer Health Tax (EHT), Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB), Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) returns, Pension Plan Annual Information Return, and Annual Occupancy Reports
  • Support the year-end audit process and ensure compliance with relevant policies and procedures
  • Support the VP FInance in analyzing and reporting on cash flow, bank deposits, revenues, expenditures, petty cash, account reconciliations, arrears and other key business indicators
  • Support the VP Finance in onboarding Managers and Directors to Salus accounting policies and procedures
  • Work with Finance colleagues to improve processes, identify efficiencies, and implement changes that enhance productivity
  • Act as a subject matter expert on financial transactions and provide guidance to staff and leadership
  • Support the VP Finance in identifying, assessing, and monitoring financial risks by conducting analysis to support risk mitigation strategies and ensure informed decision-making
  • Provide team guidance and support to promote effective financial service delivery and continuous quality improvement
  • Support the orientation and training of Finance staff in collaboration with the VP Finance
  • Work collaboratively with management to foster a work environment aligned with Salus’ values
  • Provide back-up coverage as needed to support the various functions of the Finance department including but not limited to: payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, donations and financial reporting
  • Maintain compliance with agency policies, procedures, standards and strategic plan
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities, as assigned or instructed by the VP Finance to support the effective operation of the Finance department and to ensure alignment with organizational goals and standards
