About The Position

The Financial Analyst (FA) will be responsible for delivering accurate and timely financial analysis to support corporate accounting, construction and development, and special projects. In addition, the FA will support financial planning and forecasting processes, perform detailed cost and variance analyses, and support monthly, quarterly and year-end close activities. The FA will need to translate the analyses into meaningful insights and actionable recommendations to inform decision-making at all levels within the organization. The FA will work on, but may also be required to take ownership of, various special projects such as process improvement initiatives and financial system enhancements.

Requirements

University Degree in Accounting/Business or equivalent work experience with a professional accounting designation.
Minimum five years of progressive experience in accounting and/or financial analysis, preferably in a not-for-profit, construction/development, and/or real estate environment.
Must have a strong understanding of GAAP and internal controls.
Must be able to build strong collaborative relationships and establish rapport and credibility within the organization and with external partners and service providers.
Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Must have strong organizational and planning abilities to manage multiple tasks, projects and deadlines while maintaining attention to details, timeliness and budgets.
Must have excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically with Excel.
Able to communicate fluently and effectively, both written and orally, in English and work well with property management/site staff.
As a condition of employment, a successful police record check for Vulnerable Sector is required.
Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the country where this role is located.

Responsibilities

Perform daily accounting activities as part of the full cycle accounting process, including journal entries, bank reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance.
Reconcile accounts and ensure the accuracy of financial data across multiple entities or cost centers, including intercompany transactions and allocations.
Support the month-end and year-end close processes, including accruals and balance sheet reviews, to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
Assist in the preparation of financial statements in compliance with GAAP, not-for-profit accounting standards, and internal organizational policies.
Contribute to the budgeting and forecasting process by collecting financial data, preparing reports, and performing variance analyses.
Assist with annual audit processes by preparing supporting documentation and responding to external auditor requests.
Prepare and file regulatory and government remittances, including HST/GST, payroll taxes, and annual compliance returns.
Monitor, track, and report on restricted and designated funds in accordance with donor or funder requirements, where applicable.
Contribute to the development, documentation, and continuous improvement of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Participate in financial systems improvements, automation projects, and upgrades to accounting software or tools.
Collaborate effectively with departments such as operations, payroll, and procurement to ensure financial accuracy and operational alignment.
Provide backup support to accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, ensuring continuity of service.
Respond to internal and external financial inquiries in a timely accurate and professional manner.
Perform other accounting duties as required.
Support all functions surrounding full cycle accounting, including daily bank reconciliations, journal entries, general ledger maintenance, cost recovery, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and year-end billing processes.
Prepare timely and accurate monthly financial statements, including detailed variance analysis, account reconciliations, and ratio analysis. Investigate discrepancies and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
Review and analyze financial data and statements, including covenant adherence, independently identifying and resolving issues with minimal supervision.
Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting required by the Board of Directors, funders, and other stakeholders, including the drafting of presentations and commentary.
Collaborate with Management and department leads to prepare annual budgets and quarterly forecasts, incorporating capital and operating expenditure projections.
Monitor, review and reconcile development project and operating costs budgets, highlighting issues and recommending potential solutions. Prepare and distribute case allocation and cost recovery reports on a monthly or quarterly basis as required.
Prepare year-end audit packages and entity-level financial statements. Act as a key point of contact for external auditors throughout the audit process.
Ensure that all financial reporting processes are completed accurately, timely, and in compliance with organizational, project-specific, and funder requirements.
Oversee the timely preparation and filing of all regulatory and government financial returns, including monthly, quarterly, and annual submissions.
Work collaboratively across departments, particularly with property management and other internal teams, to provide responsive, value-added financial support and client service.

Identify, support and/or lead internal process improvements, including enhancements to reporting, controls, and system integration.
Lead or support financial analysis for ad hoc initiatives such as program expansions, mergers, technology investments, or new funding opportunities.
Contribute to cross-functional teams working on organizational priorities as needed.

Be knowledgeable about and act within relevant legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), Mental Health Act, the Child and Family Services Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), Housing Services Act, and Ontario Fire and Building Codes.
Participate in and represent the organization at external committees and forums as assigned.
Participate in internal committees and/or activities relating to the organization (IE staff, Annual General Meeting, social recreational events, etc.).
Keep Manager or Supervisor informed and updated on relevant issues.
