About The Position

Manage coding and provide education regarding documentation requirements for the Outpatient Cancer Center which includes hematology/oncology infusion and transfusion services to improve quality of coding, documentation and to ensure accurate and complete capture of revenue.

Requirements

  • HS/GED required, Associates degree preferred.
  • Certification as RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P or any other coding related and nationally recognized designation is required
  • Outpatient coding is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and computer skills are essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Oncology related coding experience is helpful
  • Oncology business office or patient accounts experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of facility based billing/reimbursement methodologies including APCs, as well as knowledge of federal, state and payer specific regulations and policies is a plus.
  • Exposure or participation in documentation improvement programs is helpful but not mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for performing specialty coding for the Outpatient Cancer Center which includes hematology/oncology infusion services, medical office visits, and transfusion services.
  • Validate and determine appropriate coding levels by obtaining and reviewing clinical documentation.
  • Compare and review charge tickets, both manually and system generated, to clinical documentation to ensure that all charges for procedures and pharmacy items have been accurately documented and captured.
  • Ensure that documentation supports charges to prevent denials/underpayments.
  • Follow-up on missing charge tickets and clinical documentation as appropriate
  • Assist with implementation of documentation and revenue enhancement opportunities.
  • Develop a working relationship with clinical staff to identify and implement appropriate documentation and coding modifications.
  • Review and distribute coding related information to clinical staff, including CPT and ICD-9 code changes, medical necessity policies, coding /billing information regarding new procedures and pharmacy items.
  • In conjunction with Sr. Financial Analyst, identify relevant charge master updates.
  • Responsible for resolving any coding related errors and denials that are identified by Hospitals billing system as part of the revenue enhancement initiatives.
  • Consults and provides feedback with frontline clinical staff and financial counselors to identify reimbursable indications for treatment.
  • Assists on reviews of revenue cycle with Sr Financial Analyst and Director of Revenue Cycle.
  • Participate in education programs to maintain up to date coding skills.
  • Working with Compliance, coordinate random chart audits to ensure appropriate documentation, coding and billing.

Benefits

  • The salary range for the role is $66,482.07 - $81,675.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
