About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is seeking a Financial Aid Counselor for its Financial Aid, Outreach and Client Services department. This role reports to the Senior Assistant Director of Outreach and Client Services and is responsible for educating students on financial aid opportunities, processes, and responsibilities. The counselor will provide information on financing higher education to students, families, UNLV staff, and the wider community. Key areas of knowledge include scholarships, debt management, costs of attendance, financial planning, financial aid policy and procedure, necessary paperwork, follow-up communication, business processes, and navigating web portals and applications. The position also involves attending outreach activities, meeting with students and parents, explaining financial aid processes, reviewing student accounts, and conducting group presentations. This role contributes to UNLV's core mission of increasing enrollment and promoting equitable student success by addressing systemic obstacles and implementing strategic services and support. The position is expected to exemplify the university's core values, demonstrating professionalism, collegiality, ethical conduct, transparency, and a commitment to inclusion. Occasional evening and weekend work, as well as occasional travel, may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • 1-3 years of Related Professional Experience.
  • Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.
  • Degree must be from a regionally accredited program within higher education.
  • Employee must not be in overpayment or default status for any Federal Student Aid program or award.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle with valid auto insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Works directly with students to enhance their understanding of opportunities for, and processes and responsibilities of a financial aid recipient.
  • Provides students, families, UNLV staff, internal and external community with information about financing higher education.
  • Explains scholarships, debt management strategies, costs of attendance, basic financial planning, financial aid policy & procedure, necessary paperwork for specific processes, follow up (electronic correspondence, phone calls), business processes, and how to navigate web portals (both UNLV and external), and interactive applications.
  • Attends outreach activities where they can meet 1:1 with prospective and current students and parents.
  • Explains financial aid processes and review student accounts for eligibility and award status.
  • Provides group presentations as necessary.
  • Contributes to increasing enrollment and promoting equitable student success.
  • Addresses systemic obstacles and implementing strategic services, programs, and support to enhance student enrollment, retention, successful progression, timely completion, and equitable outcomes.
