About The Position

The City of La Porte is offering a Fall Internship in Finance. This program is designed for individuals currently pursuing a bachelor's or graduate degree, or who have recently graduated within the last six months. The internship provides valuable hands-on experience in municipal operations, with a focus on department projects and administrative tasks related to local government. The ideal candidate will demonstrate reliability, strong leadership, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team. This is an on-site internship, and interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree, graduate degree, or be a recent graduate (in the last six months).
  • Strong interest in government service.
  • Demonstrate reliability, strong leadership capabilities, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of modern office methods, procedures, equipment, and business letter writing.
  • Ability to compose correspondence.
  • Ability to understand the organization and operation of the City and of outside agencies.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to learn department policies, procedures, organization and operating details.
  • Ability to type at a speed necessary for adequate job performance.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer, calculator, and fax machine.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to compile and maintain complex and extensive records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action.

Responsibilities

  • Support the daily operations of various departments throughout the City of La Porte.
  • Provide technical assistance to department directors and division managers.
  • Gain hands-on experience in a variety of complex and confidential administrative tasks related to local government operations.
  • Prepare and interpret statistical analysis.
  • Assist with tasks related to the principles and methods of accounting and auditing.
  • Support the principles and practices of financial administration, including budgeting and reporting.
