About The Position

Bretton AI is seeking a Finance Director to be their first full-time finance hire. This is a strategic role responsible for owning the finance function end-to-end, including building systems, establishing data infrastructure, and serving as a Finance partner to the leadership team during a period of scaling. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, capable of performing tasks independently, and possess the strategic vision to guide the department's growth. The role involves setting up financial infrastructure to enable fast and confident decision-making.

Requirements

  • 5–10 years of finance experience, with a mix of FP&A, strategic finance, or operational finance.
  • Demonstrated success at a high-growth startup, investment banking, and/or consulting.
  • Strong accounting knowledge to avoid building technical debt.
  • Experience setting up or significantly improving financial infrastructure from an early stage.
  • Hands-on and self-sufficient; able to hunt data independently.
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and making decisions with imperfect information.
  • Based in San Francisco [or willingness to relocate/travel].

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fintech, regtech, or other regulated industries.
  • Experience at a high-growth Series B+ startup.
  • Familiarity with tools like QuickBooks, Orb, Rippling, or similar finance/HR platforms.
  • Experience working alongside outsourced accounting teams and knowing how to get the most out of them.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a strategic thought partner to the CEO and leadership team on cash burn management, headcount planning, and fundraising preparation.
  • Develop a short-, medium-, and long-term vision for the Finance department, ensuring scalability of team and processes.
  • Deeply understand the business model, customer base, partnerships, and company vision.
  • Collaborate with sales and product teams to refine pricing strategies and improve profit margins.
  • Partner with engineering, product, and revenue teams to understand product lifecycles, business milestones, and data availability.
  • Build financial models, forecasts, and dashboards for real-time business performance insights.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and maintain rolling forecasts.
  • Oversee the finance tech stack, including system migration and efficiency improvements.
  • Own Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, with a focus on automation.
  • Manage the accounting foundation in partnership with outsourced accounting teams.
  • Lay the accounting groundwork for future complexities such as technical revenue recognition.
