ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION We are one of 111 councils chartered by GSUSA, the world's leading organization dedicated solely to girls, where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success. In partnership with caring adults, girls develop qualities to serve them all their lives: strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their potential and self-worth. We serve almost 7,000 girls throughout southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. With the guidance of over 5,000 dedicated and trained volunteers, girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. From exploring science, technology and the environment to learning about healthy living, anti-bullying and financial literacy, girls are given opportunities to be challenged and learn new skills. SUMMARY OF POSITION The finance director is responsible for the sound fiscal control and management of the Council’s financial stability and operations including financial reporting, investments, annual budgets, audits, and reports. They analyze and generate financial reports and interpret them to management, board of directors, finance committee, and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in fund or nonprofit accounting.
  • Supervisory experience leading a professional team required.
  • Excellent technical skills in Microsoft Office 365.
  • Knowledge of general accepted accounting practices and PCI compliance regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and administration of budgets, financial reports, and audits.
  • Strength in strategic planning, problem solving and project management with attention to detail.
  • Ability to leverage critical thinking skills, especially around data, to make impactful business decisions
  • Ability to analyze information, formulate work plans, articulate goals, and produce required statistical reports.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work while managing multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to interact with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekends.
  • Ability to travel throughout Council jurisdiction.
  • Must have personal transportation, possess a valid driver’s license, personal auto insurance, and meet the Council insurance company’s requirement for coverage.
  • Subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement and become a registered member of GSUSA.
  • Successfully pass background investigation.

  • Executive team and Board experience preferred.
  • Experience with MIP Fund Accounting, Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce, and Paylocity experience preferred.
  • Ability to learn new software as required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key member of the Council’s leadership team, helping to establish priorities, launch new initiatives, align resources, adapt systems, and champion change.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement internal financial controls and policies to ensure that the Council’s assets are protected. Ensure that all Council financial operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, federal, and not-for-profit regulations, guidelines, and laws.
  • Assist the CEO in the development and management of the annual operating budget (approximately $5M) for presentation to the board and monitor performance of the approved budget.
  • Manage day-to-day operations to ensure accurate and timely processing of financial transactions and financial reporting and alignment with accounting standards. Monitors daily cash management to ensure financial health of the Council.
  • Oversee Council technology to ensure the availability, security, and integrity of all technology (hardware and software) needed to support Council functions and strategic plan. Manage all Council technology contracts and maintenance agreements.
  • Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial statements, cash flow projections, forecasts, and other financial reports to assist the CEO and executive team in decision-making and goal execution.
  • Oversee financial and operational audits. Identify opportunities for improved efficiencies and supervise the implementation of improvements to internal controls and operating procedures.
  • Manage the Council’s business continuity plan and review annually.
  • Serve as staff liaison and coordinate the efforts of the finance, audit, investment committees, and board treasurer to ensure that the board effectively executes its fiscal responsibility.
  • Keep current on accounting rules and regulations to ensure that federal, state, and local regulations are followed.
  • Exercise management, operational, and budgetary oversight in all areas of accountability.
  • Lead, motivate, and retain a high performing staff. Evaluate and manage team performance. Ensure full team effort, optimal productivity levels, and attainment of team/individual goals.
  • Active participation in the development of environments that foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and access through words, actions, and attitude.
