About The Position

The Finance Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial operations, ensuring accuracy in reporting, compliance with regulations, and strong internal controls. This role manages accounting functions, financial reporting, budgeting, and audit coordination while providing strategic financial guidance to leadership.

Requirements

  • Nonprofit Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred)
  • 5–10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience
  • Experience in financial reporting, budgeting, and audits
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting in accordance with GAAP (or other applicable standards)
  • Analyze financial results and provide insights to support decision-making
  • Maintain general ledger integrity and reconcile accounts
  • Lead annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes
  • Monitor organizational performance against budget and provide variance analysis
  • Partner with department leaders on financial planning
  • Analyze financial data to assess organizational performance and identify trends
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop financial strategies that align with organizational goals
  • Provide financial insights to support decision-making and strategic initiatives
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls and financial policies
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Coordinate and manage external audits and tax filings
  • Ensure adherence to nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements
  • Assist in the preparation for audits and support the implementation of audit recommendations, including sitting in on desk reviews
  • Monitor cash flow, banking relationships, and liquidity
  • Oversee accounts payable and receivable processes
  • Optimize financial resources and minimize risk
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff
  • Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement
  • Support cross-functional collaboration with HR, operations, and executive leadership
  • Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes and improve efficiency
  • Support in benefit open enrollment, workers' compensation, and unemployment insurance elections
  • Assist in the implementation of financial systems and tools to enhance reporting capabilities
