This role involves field testing of water samples, observing and directing vessel personnel during sample collection, and receiving, inspecting, sorting, and labeling client samples. The Field Technician will also deliver and ship samples to the laboratory, observe sampling of other commodities, and perform sample preparation tasks such as sorting, crushing, pulverizing, splitting, and screening. Additionally, the position requires archiving, returning, or disposing of samples, logging samples into the system, preparing labels, and conducting basic field testing and measurements. The technician will work from various instructions, perform equipment calibration and maintenance, interpret results, compile data, analyze findings, and prepare reports. Maintaining a clean working environment, adhering to health, safety, and environmental policies, and following quality system protocols are essential. The role may require working in other SGS areas as needed and involves some independent judgment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (or equivalent) - Required
  • Good hand eye coordination when handling samples and various equipment
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be comfortable driving frequently to various work site locations.
  • Candidate must can use various types of computer software (word, excel, etc.)
  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to work well with others and independently
  • Works well under pressure
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
  • Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Post Secondary Education (degree or diploma) in a science related program (Chemistry) - Strong Asset
  • Minimum 1-year experience in a related industry - Strong Asset

Responsibilities

  • Field testing of water samples.
  • Witness and observe how samples are taken and direct the vessel personnel when necessary.
  • Receive, inspect, sort and label client samples.
  • Deliver and ship samples to the laboratory.
  • Observe sampling of other commodities following established protocols.
  • Sort, crush, pulverize, split and screen samples as required.
  • Archive, return or dispose of client samples as per work sheet instructions.
  • Log client samples into the system and prepare sample labels.
  • Conduct basic testing and basic measurements in the field.
  • Work from sketches, detailed specifications and verbal instructions.
  • Calibration and set up of equipment prior to analysis.
  • Maintain and record equipment calibrations.
  • Carries out routine equipment maintenance under the direction of his/her Supervisor.
  • Interpret and evaluate all results.
  • Compiles data, analyses and prepares reports.
  • Maintain a clean working environment.
  • Follow all company health, safety and environmental policies.
  • Follow all quality system protocols and report any discrepancies to the Supervisor.
  • May be asked to work in other SGS areas when needed.
  • Some independent judgement required.
