About The Position

Zayo is seeking a Field Technician II in the Greater Sacramento Area who will primarily be responsible for performing duties associated with hands on functions within the telecommunications industry. Our Field Technician II is moderately proficient in the troubleshooting and maintenance of various types of equipment. Our ideal Field Technician II has a strong technical, mechanical and electrical background and is familiar and proficient around all major manufacturers of transport equipment, low/high voltage electrical systems, DC power plant as well as knowledgeable in critical infrastructure, ISP/OSP and all associated test systems to include optical, electrical and power testing equipment associated with the telecommunications industry. Our Field Technician II will proficiently install, test or turn up a variety of telecommunications equipment including SONET, TDM, DWDM, IP or Ethernet based equipment with limited supervision from the team lead or manager. They'll also troubleshoot and handle maintenance of various types of equipment (i.e. Ciena, Nokia, Infinera, Juniper, Cisco). The assigned shift may vary based on needs of the business and typically includes an "On-Call" shift rotation. Please note that this role will be based out of our office location in Rancho Cordova, CA and working in the field. Our ideal candidate will reside within 1.5 hours of the Sacramento metro area.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of telecommunications network infrastructure, fiber optic systems, transport equipment, critical infrastructure, ISP/OSP environments, and related field practices.
  • Experience installing, testing, turning up, troubleshooting, or maintaining telecommunications equipment and services, including SONET, TDM, DWDM, IP, or Ethernet-based platforms.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, MSDS/SDS documents, MOPs, CLR/DLR documentation, procedures, and vendor materials related to company-owned equipment.
  • Ability to work in varied field environments, including indoor and outdoor locations, heights, confined spaces, construction areas, various terrain, and changing weather conditions.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements of the role, including lifting up to 75 pounds, and to comply with company safety, fleet, background check, and identification requirements.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in fiber optic installation, maintenance, telecommunications, network infrastructure, or a related technical field required.
  • Experience using basic fiber and telecommunications testing equipment required; OTDR, DC power, RFC2544, RFC6349/Truespeed, iPerf, Y.1564, and 1G/10G/100G/400G circuit testing experience preferred.
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license required; must maintain company vehicle eligibility, including no more than two moving violations within the past three years.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using basic fiber and telecommunications testing equipment required; OTDR, DC power, RFC2544, RFC6349/Truespeed, iPerf, Y.1564, and 1G/10G/100G/400G circuit testing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Install, test, turn up, decommission, and troubleshoot network and customer services, including SONET, TDM, DWDM, IP, Ethernet, and related transport equipment.
  • Perform optical, Ethernet, BER, SONET, circuit, and power testing using appropriate tools such as OTDRs, optical power meters, digital multimeters, fiber identifiers, and fiber scopes.
  • Complete installation commissioning and ongoing support of optical transmission systems, DC power, low/high voltage electrical systems, and related critical infrastructure.
  • Perform preventive and demand maintenance for network facilities, equipment, materials, and assigned infrastructure to support service reliability and operational standards.
  • Install, label, scope, clean, and test fiber optic patch cords and support ISP/OSP work, including metro and long-haul fiber assignments as needed.
  • Conduct site surveys and field inspections to assess building entrance requirements, equipment space availability, outdoor cabinets, buried cable, construction areas, and related facilities.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, document, and escalate potential network issues before they become service affecting, using deductive reasoning to improve network performance and customer experience.
  • Prepare accurate field documentation, including site surveys, fiber panel audits, closeout packages, power audit reports, maintenance records, and other required work records.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, peers, contractors, management, and cross-functional teams; participate in project and process meetings and serve as a resource for less experienced technicians.
  • Follow safety procedures, maintain eligibility to operate a company vehicle, complete vehicle inspections, and support on-call, after-hours, extended-shift, and overnight travel requirements as assigned.
