About The Position

EMC Mechanical Services is searching for a Field Survey Technician to join our Construction Team! The Field Survey Technician has a background in mechanical and plumbing projects and collects precise data for planning, installation, and maintenance of plumbing systems, ensuring they align with project specifications, local building codes, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of experience working as a Surveyor, particularly in mechanical or plumbing construction projects.
  • Proficient with total station survey equipment, as well as GPS, laser levels, and other surveying tools.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and plumbing systems, including piping layouts and HVAC systems is preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license.
  • Must have positive points on state driving record.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age unless company approval is granted.
  • Must not have had a DUI, DWI, or reckless driving conviction in the last five years.

Responsibilities

  • Surveying and Layout: Use Hilti Total Station or other surveying equipment to take precise measurements for mechanical and plumbing installations such as pipes, vents, ducts, and fixtures.
  • Establish reference points, lines, and elevations for the proper placement of mechanical and plumbing components within the building or project area.
  • Perform as-built surveys to ensure the installation of systems aligns with the original design and contract documents.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Collect accurate field data regarding the positioning of pipes, drains, water systems, and other plumbing elements.
  • Record and analyze measurements of mechanical systems (ex. HVAC, piping, and ductwork) to ensure correct positioning and integration within the building’s overall structure.
  • Document survey findings, including measurements, sketches, and notes, ensuring proper organization and clarity for later use by project managers, designers, and engineers.
  • Coordinate with Project Teams: Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and the plumbing team to ensure the layout data aligns with design plans and specifications.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations to resolve any discrepancies between field conditions and the project’s design.
  • Assist in resolving any mechanical and plumbing layout issues that arise during the construction phase.
  • Installation Support: Mark and stake out locations for trenches, plumbing runs, and mechanical system layouts.
  • Verify and confirm that installations meet design criteria, code requirements, and site conditions.
  • Quality Control and Compliance: Ensure that all surveying work adheres to local building codes, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Monitor and ensure the quality and accuracy of the plumbing and mechanical system installation process, checking for alignment, level, and proper placement.
  • Maintenance and Calibration of Equipment: Regularly calibrate and maintain equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve minor issues with surveying tools.
